In just a few months, audiences will be saying “Hello, Sidney” to Neve Campbell when she reprises her role as Scream’s original final girl, Sidney Prescott in Scream 7. She won’t be the only one returning to the fold, either, as her past co-stars Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley, and David Arquette will also be making a comeback. Behind the scenes, universe creator and the scribe of Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4, Kevin Williamson, will helm the seventh installment. Earlier today, during a career retrospective at the ATX TV Festival, presented by Universal Studio Group, Williamson was asked what about Scream 7 made him sign on as its helmer and, for him, it was all because the studio was saying hello to Sidney Prescott once again.
“The company pitched it to me because they said, ‘This is going to be about Sidney Prescott. It needs to be about Sidney.’ That’s why I would want to do it. I do think there’s a world we haven’t tapped into — we’ve never gone home with her, who she is today, and we don’t know what her life is about. I want to know those things.”
While we don’t know where the seventh movie will take place, Williamson’s words seem to confirm that we’ll follow her to where she’s settled down with her family, which includes her husband, Mark (Joel McHale), and the couple’s unnamed daughter, who will be portrayed by Isabel May. The movie will also include Ghostfaces of yesteryear who found themselves dead by the end of their installments, like Lillard’s Stu Macher and Foley’s Roman Bridger, so it’s rather quite unclear where the direction of this movie is going.
Kevin Williamson Explains Neve Campbell’s Return
We’ve known for a while now that Campbell didn’t reprise her role in Scream VI due to payment discrepancies, a decision that was supported by Williamson at the time. But the Dawson’s Creek creator says that it was also about where the previous script was tossing Campbell’s beloved character in and how she played into the story.
“There was this big thing about the pay discrepancy, but it was also about the part. It was like, ‘You want me to show up at the end of a movie with a gun and help everyone shoot Ghostface? That’s great. I’ll do it.’ She was happy, but she’d also wanted a part. Actresses want to play parts.”
And, according to Williamson (and also Scream 7 scribe, Guy Busick), the new movie will certainly see Campbell playing her part.
“So we were able to tap into that and find a way in. Working with Neve, we did it together. She was with me every step of the way, and she was so supportive and so helpful. She walked me through a lot of it. I hope it shows, but we had a blast.”
Scream 7 will slash into cinemas on February 27, 2026.
