It’s been over six years since the animated series Steven Universe came to an end, and aside from the 2019 movie and the 2020 epilogue series, Cartoon Network has yet to revisit the world of its grand coming-of-age space opera. Created by Rebecca Sugar, the groundbreaking show premiered in 2013 and became a standout for kids and parents alike, winning an Emmy and a Peabody award and being hailed for its story of love, family, inclusion, and identity centered on young Steven and the Crystal Gems. Now, it’s finally time to revisit the cosmos through the eyes of the series’ eternal teenage outlaw. At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival Studio Showcase by Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, a new sequel series titled Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars was announced to be in development for Prime Video.
Lars of the Stars is described as an exploration of “the past, present, and future of the Steven Universe universe” centered on Laramie “Lars” Barriga. The character featured throughout the original series as the captain of the Off-Colors, a band of space pirates combating the Gem Homeworld. However, his past and connection to the Homeworld are largely left as a mystery. His new swashbuckling solo outing will look to remedy that, as he and his fellow outlaws smuggle contraband, evade authorities, and unearth the fallen Gem Empire’s darkest secrets, all with similar themes to the original show. It’s a chance to dig into not just Lars’s origins, but those of other characters and flesh out the Steven Universe lore.
Sugar will be at the helm of the sequel as an executive producer alongside veteran Steven Universe writer Ian Jones-Quartey. Beyond Sugar‘s flagship series, Jones-Quartey is best known for creating a hit of his own in OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, which ran from 2017 through 2019. Since Lars of the Stars is so early in development, the cast and other crew members have yet to be announced. It’ll be the third series in the Steven Universe franchise, following Steven Universe Future, which addressed the aftermath of the show’s controversial ending.
‘Teen Titans Go!’ Is Also Flying in for a Tenth Season
More Steven Universe wasn’t all that Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. had in store for Annecy. The longest-running DC animated series, Teen Titans Go!, was picked up for a tenth season on Cartoon Network, ensuring more silly adventures for Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Raven. Developed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the main cast of the original Teen Titans — Scott Menville, Hynden Walch, Khary Payton, Tara Strong, and Greg Cipes — the show has kept the comedy coming for viewers since 2013, showing what happens in the time between the titular team’s superheroing duties. The news comes following a recent update from Warner Bros. Pictures CEOs Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca teasing a new live-action movie featuring the five heroes, as well as another cinematic outing for their animated counterparts following 2018’s Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.
The flagship series is currently available to stream on Hulu.
