Across seven seasons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, fans watched as Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) went from slaying vampires and trying to get through high school, to doing much the same in college, to becoming a full-fledged adult. Buffy loved and lost across those seven seasons and now, the Buffyverse is looking to continue again with the reboot that was announced earlier this year. Now, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Gellar reveals some of her goals for the upcoming reboot that will focus on Skeleton Crew‘s Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the Chosen One, with Gellar set to executive produce and reprise her role as Buffy. Gellar says that the series “will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original.” She goes on to say for the sequel series:

“One of the surprising aspects of Buffy is that it’s always been a crossover series. We’re trying to figure out how to modernize the themes of the series, especially what it means to feel like an outsider in a world dominated by social media. What we want to explore are the space-time boundaries that affect society today.”

A Change in Tone Isn’t the Only Thing Gellar Wants Out of the ‘Buffy’ Revival

Changing the tone, bringing it into the modern age all seems like reasonable enough for the upcoming revival of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. As Gellar tells Vanity Fair, though, there is an even loftier goal she’s got in mind, and honestly? It’s intriguing, insane, and bonkers, and we’re here for it. She tells Vanity Fair, “My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.” Buffy has lost close friends and enemies, and even her mother across the seven seasons of the series and into the spin-off Angel.

Two of the most devastating character deaths of the original series were Tara Maclay (Amber Benson) and Buffy’s mother Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland). Another death to “right” could also very well be Charisma Carpenter‘s Cordelia Chase, whose character died in Angel. She told fans at Indiana Comic Con, “I think it would be very poetic to be invited back, especially having the people that were involved to begin with, the best parts of it, Gail Berman, and then having Chloé Zhao direct — Oscar winner and, in general, badass [Laughs] — and then the Zuck sisters who are incredible writers and then obviously Sarah backing it and I hope to be part of it.”
