Watch out, Sherlock Holmes, because the date is set for the arrival of Paris’s most beloved detective on PBS Masterpiece. A new teaser trailer for Maigret has just been released, introducing Benjamin Wainwright as the titular world-famous sleuth in the first-ever modern-day-set adaptation of Georges Simenon‘s bestselling detective stories. It offers a peek into his vividly depicted Paris, full of glitz, mystery, danger, and warmth alike. Along with the footage from the reboot came the exciting news that this new take on the Parisian will make his first appearance on U.S. television screens on October 5.
The new spin on Maigret takes Chief Inspector Jules Maigret through the city of love, from its upper-class luxury hotels and mansions to local bistros and bars, and the many haunts inhabited by the criminal underground. As seen in the trailer, what sets him apart from other famous sleuths is that he approaches every case with understanding, not judgment, seeking to unravel the why of crime instead of just the who. He’s not one to buckle to pressure, though, facing danger with a brave face and being unafraid to fight back against the most threatening of criminals he encounters. The footage shows the detective not only haunted by tragedy but also doubted by his superiors, who see his approach to solving mysteries as an unnecessary gamble that will one day blow up in the department’s face. That doesn’t stop him from confidently leading the police forward to get justice for the people of Paris, even if he admits that he’s been wrong before.
This version of Maigret differs from his predecessors, most recently including Rowan Atkinson, in that he’s young, hungry, and still trying to prove that his mantra of understanding over judgment and method of connecting with people works. Judging from the trailer, his wife, Madame Louise Maigret, will also play a large role in the story, supporting him through each case and even coming in for the assist when he needs a fresh perspective. Stefanie Martini stars opposite Wainwright as Louise, with the rest of the ensemble including Blake Harrison, Reda Elazouar, Kerrie Hayes, Shaniqua Okwok, Rob Kazinsky, and Nathalie Armin.
Who Is Behind the Modern Reboot of ‘Maigret’?
At the helm of the new Maigret is writer and executive producer Patrick Harbinson, known for his past writing and production roles on Homeland and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. In addition to his work with the pen, he also directed the first two episodes, while his The Tower director, Faye Gilbert, took the reins for Episodes 3 and 4, and David Evans took Episodes 5 and 6. The production was handled by a familiar PBS Masterpiece partner in the BAFTA-winning Playground Entertainment of Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light and All Creatures Great and Small fame. Together, the team looked to bring to life the second-best-selling detective series of all time, behind only Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s signature sleuth, in a new and exciting way.
Maigret premieres on Masterpiece on PBS on October 5 at 9 p.m. ET. Check out the trailer in the player above.
