Steven Spielberg’s new horror film is coming soon. The movie is based on a hit YouTube series and now has a release date set. First reported earlier this year, the film will adapt The Mandela Catalogue, an analog horror franchise created by Alex Kister.
Deadline has reported that The Mandela Catalogue has a release date set for June 9, 2028. The film will be produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, Scott Stuber’s United Artists, and Amazon MGM Studios. Kister is set to direct the feature from a screenplay he co-wrote with Tyler Clifton. Both Kister and Clifton will also produce the film. Additional producers include Holly Bario for Amblin, Aaron B. Koontz for Paper Street Pictures, and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists.

The Mandela Catalogue is set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, and it chronicles the town getting invaded by shape-shifting creatures called Alternates. The series follows the Alternates taking control of computer systems after being led by a false depiction of Archangel Gabriel. The series has crossed over 100 million views on YouTube. The most recent entry in The Mandela Catalogue was released earlier in May, amassing over 640,000 views.
The series is regarded highly in the horror space, following in the footsteps of franchises like Backrooms. The adaptation comes on the heels of two YouTuber-led films taking Hollywood by storm. Both Backrooms and Obsession, directed by Kane Parsons and Curry Barker, were major box office hits this year, grossing over $700 million worldwide.
Following that, Spielberg will also collaborate with Weapons and Resident Evil director Zach Cregger on The Flood. Spielberg’s most recent release was this summer’s Disclosure Day, which became his highest-grossing film since 2018. The filmmaker is also developing a sequel to Ready Player One.
