History is coming alive today in Apple TV+’s official trailer for Chief of War. The Jason Momoa-led, executive-produced, and penned production will make its way onto the streamer later this summer with a two-episode premiere on August 1, followed by brand-new installments every Friday through September 19. A project close to the actor’s own heart, the nine-episode title charts the course of a warrior named Ka‘iana (Momoa) as he attempts to bring the people of the islands of Hawai‘i together ahead of Western colonization. Set in the 18th century and against the lush, sprawling, and jaw-dropping scenery of Hawai‘i, the series is based on a true story that uses the backgrounds of its co-creators — Momoa and Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett — to give audiences an indigenous perspective.
Setting the stage for your next favorite historical series, today’s Chief of War trailer introduces Momoa’s Ka‘iana as a man who has seen the world beyond the islands and is afraid of what will happen when the outside inhabitants discover his people’s paradise. But, before he can even think about the threat arriving by sea, he knows that there must be unification between the different tribes who have long called the sprawling beaches and flourishing forests home. His quest for peace won’t be an easy one, as not everyone sees the threat for what it is. As the neighbors clash, the real villains quickly approach and attempt to stake their claim.
Known for his roles in favorites like Game of Thrones, Fast X, A Minecraft Movie, and Dune, Momoa’s face isn’t the only familiar one in the latest look at Chief of War. Filling out the incredibly stacked ensemble is a lineup that includes Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent), Temuera Morrison (The Book of Boba Fett), Moses Goods (Hae Hawaii), Te Ao o Hinepehinga (Head High), Cliff Curtis (Training Day), James Udom (Judas and the Black Messiah), Kaina Makua, Siua Ikale‘o (NCIS: Hawai’i), Te Kohe Tuhaka (The Dead Lands), Brandon Finn (Inheritance), Benjamin Hoetjes (Avatar: The Way of Water), and Mainei Kinimaka (The Last Manhunt).
Jason Momoa and Apple TV+ Reunite with ‘Chief of War’
Momoa’s latest project not only allows him to dig into his culture, but it also marks a reunion between the actor and Apple TV+. In the past, the studio backed Steven Knight’s sci-fi drama, See, which featured Momoa in a co-leading role alongside Alfre Woodard. For three seasons, the title captivated audiences and critics alike, holding a critics’ approval rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers boosted it even higher to 84%. His latest series also allows Momoa to further lean into his love for historical dramas following his leading turn and executive producer position on Netflix’s Frontier.
