Well, so much for the reunion tour. Guy Ritchie has officially exited Road House 2, the upcoming sequel to Amazon MGM Studios‘ wildly successful reboot of the 1989 cult classic. The Aladdin and The Gentlemen director was set to reteam with Jake Gyllenhaal for what would’ve been their third collaboration — but as of now, he’s off the project. Production was scheduled to kick off this September, and it may still, depending on who steps in. There’s no word yet on why Ritchie stepped away, and neither the studio nor his reps have issued a statement. But it’s a noticeable shake-up for a film that was shaping up to be one of Prime Video’s biggest 2026 releases.
The first Road House reboot, directed by Doug Liman, dropped on Prime Video in March 2024 and became a record-breaking hit. Within eight weeks, it attracted nearly 80 million viewers globally, making it Amazon MGM’s “most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis,” per former studio head Jennifer Salke. The film saw Gyllenhaal step into Patrick Swayze’s boots as Dalton — a former UFC fighter hired to clean up a Florida Keys bar, only to find himself caught in a violent turf war.
Despite the streaming success, Liman publicly criticized Amazon for skipping a theatrical release. He told IndieWire that he wasn’t compensated properly due to the distribution switch after Amazon acquired MGM. That controversy didn’t stop the sequel from moving forward, but it did clear the way for Ritchie to step in — until now.
Who Is Still In ‘Road House 2’?
As of now, Jake Gyllenhaal remains on board, reprising his lead role and producing through his Nine Stories banner alongside Josh McLaughlin. Charles Roven and Alex Gartner return as producers for Atlas Entertainment, and the script is being handled by Will Beall, whose credits include Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The sequel was reportedly eyeing Dave Bautista for a major role, though it’s unclear if casting will be affected by Ritchie’s exit.
Ritchie’s departure may have less to do with behind-the-scenes drama and more to do with his increasingly jam-packed schedule. He just wrapped Fountain of Youth for Apple TV+, is overseeing the second season of Netflix’s The Gentlemen, and is prepping Wife & Dog, a black comedy with Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins. He also has the upcoming action thriller In the Grey with Gyllenhaal — still intact, for now.
Road House is still available to stream on Prime Video, and Road House 2 is still officially in development.
