‘Rebel Moon 3’: Zack Snyder Provides Uncertain Update on the Future of His Netflix Sci-Fi Franchise!!

The world of film entertainment knows Zack Snyder for the director’s unmatched ability to weave lengthy storylines. Oftentimes, audiences don’t get to see the entirety of the work, but with his Netflix sci-fi franchise, Rebel Moon, they get to see quite a lot. Since stepping aside from the DC Universe, the sci-fi franchise has become the director’s most popular and profitable. The first film, Rebel Moon: Part One — A Child of Fire, was released in December 2023, and was followed a few months later in 2024 by the sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. The Rebel Moon films follow a human colony on the outskirts of the universe that finds itself the target of a much larger enemy. To resist and fight subjugation, they rely on a small band of rebels, with one being a famed officer with the tyrannical ruling force.

The sci-fi franchise is due a third installment, but Snyder has recently revealed that a return to the franchise isn’t currently his priority. Snyder‘s Rebel Moon film franchise has expanded, with Netflix releasing a video game, Blood Line, based on it. Seeing that Netflix has taken the initiative to expand the franchise somewhat, Snyder was quizzed by Variety about the film franchise continuing. The Man of Steel director wasn’t certain, revealing that he’s currently working on an LAPD SWAT movie for Netflix. The director’s comments read:

I got sidetracked into this — not sidetracked, it’s all uptown problems, as they say — for Netflix, I’m working on an LAPD SWAT movie […] So I was like, OK, well, I’m gonna just sort of let that ‘Rebel Moon’ world boil for a minute, and I’m gonna go do this. And frankly, it was a very exhausting, long process doing the two movies together. So it was nice to have a bit of a break from it. I love it like crazy, but it’s nice to have a bit of a break. So yeah, we’ll see after I finish this, when I come back, where we are with everything.”

Will the ‘Rebel Moon’ Franchise Return?

While Snyder won’t be returning to the sci-fi franchise immediately, his choice of words suggests that those interested in a return can hold out hope. His use of the phrase “sidetracked” effectively suggests that the director is more than eager to return to the franchise and, for now at least, there is still some interest on the part of Netflix to continue. There have been mixed reviews regarding the first two installments in the franchise, with some being more critical than others. However, a break from such a demanding project might be just what Snyder needs to go again.

With Snyder at the helm, the Rebel Moon franchise features Sofia Boutella as rebel leader, Kora, Fra Fee as authoritarian ruler, Regent Balisarius, and Ed Skrein as the consistently villainous, Atticus Noble. Other leading performances include those from Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator), Michiel Huisman (The Haunting of Hill House), Ray Fisher (Justice League), Bae Doona (The Silent Sea), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), and Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs).

Rebel Moon: Part One — A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver are streaming now on Netflix.
