‘Wolfenstein’: New Video Game Series Adaptation in the Works at Prime Video From ‘Station Eleven’ Creator & ‘Fallout’ Producers!!

B.J. Blazkowicz is coming to the small screen armed to the teeth and ready to take down some fascists. Wolfenstein is officially the next video game adaptation in the works from Amazon MGM Studios and Kilter Films, the producers behind the global hit Fallout television series. Details are being kept under wraps at this time, aside from a short logline that aptly describes the landmark first-person shooter franchise — “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.” Patrick Somerville is creating the series with Lisa Joy, Jonathan Nolan, and Athena Wickham attached as executive producers and ready to work their magic to bring to life another storied gaming giant.

Alongside id Software‘s Doom, the Wolfenstein series was one of the progenitors of the FPS genre that has turned it into the powerhouse it is today. The franchise revolves around William “B.J.” Balzkowicz, an American World War II soldier sent behind enemy lines to mow down Nazis in their bases of operations, only to find that the Third Reich is employing eerily enhanced technology and even the occult to win the war. Castle Wolfenstein kicked off the series in 1981, though both it and its 1984 follow-up, Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, were top-down games that didn’t resemble what the series would become. It wouldn’t be until 1992’s Wolfenstein 3D that the series garnered its legendary status by switching to first-person, supercharging the Nazi-killing action, and paving the way for a total of 14 games in the franchise.

In more recent years, the franchise has been under the guidance of MachineGames with Bethesda Softworks publishing. They’ve helped revitalize the B.J.’s adventures with a modern reboot, starting with the widely-acclaimed Wolfenstein: The New Order in 2014 before expanding to a direct sequel, spin-offs, and, most recently, a VR game — Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot. Fittingly, MachineGames‘s Jerk Gustafsson is attached as an executive producer alongside James Altman of Keyframe Films, indicating that the television series will likely stick closer to the world of The New Order, which sees Blazkowicz, after spending years in a psychiatric asylum, pick up the fight in 1960 after Nazi Germany defeated the Allies and conquered the United States. No matter what Wolfenstein game, though, players are always given an expansive arsenal to rain death upon their fascist enemies.

‘Wolfenstein’ Is the Latest in Prime Video’s Push Into Video Games

Somerville already has an impressive resume, previously creating HBO Max‘s Station Eleven and Made for Love, as well as Netflix‘s Maniac. Wolfenstein is a personal project for him, though, being a game series he’s loved since he was a child. His efforts will add to a massive effort by Amazon to dominate the video game adaptation space, with a second season of Fallout set to premiere this December and a third season already ordered. Prime Video also has God of War and Mass Effect projects on the horizon, along with an adaptation of the expansive tabletop universe of Warhammer 40,000 on the way with Henry Cavill.

Wolfenstein is currently in the early stages of development.
