For fans of the NBC sitcom Community still holding out hope for a “six seasons and a movie,” we hate to be the bearers of bad news, but it looks like the wait won’t be over soon. Fans were buzzing with excitement when it was officially announced in 2022 that the movie was in the works. However, the years that followed brought little to no updates on the progress of things. Last year, however, it began to look like Greendale was finally on the verge of reopening its doors after it was revealed that a script was finished and a budget wasfirmly in place. But now? Womp womp. Star Alison Brie just confirmed another delay, and honestly, at this point, the fandom deserves group therapy, commemorative buttons, and maybe a Troy and Abed morning show to get through the heartbreak.
Brie, forever our Annie Edison, recently sat down with ScreenRant to discuss her new horror film, Together, in which she stars alongside her co-star and real-life husband, Dave Franco. However, the conversation inevitably steered to the one thing on the minds of every Community fan. Asked for a progress report on the film, Brie gave a disappointing update, crushing the hopes of filming beginning this summer as previously teased by co-star Donald Glover. According to Brie, the filming schedule has been altered as the actress confirms that things are currently on pause. But all hope isn’t lost, though, as Brie made it clear that the cast is still fully on board and remains committed to making the movie. However, it’s anyone’s guess when the production might resume.
“I truly have nothing to say about the Community movie, she said. “It’s sort of paused, and we’re all — I know the cast is really rooting for it. We all love each other so much and would love to get back on set someday.” The biggest hurdle to making Community: The Movie has been wrangling the schedules of a cast that’s constantly booked and busy. Since the show ended in 2015, everyone’s careers have been on the rise, making it nearly impossible to lock down a time that works for everyone. It’s like trying to schedule a group project with seven valedictorians who have all moved to different time zones. However, with Brie doubling down on the cast’s love for each other and their desire to reunite, it feels more like a when, not if. So hang in there, study group.
There’s a silver lining to all this Community movie delay chaos, as the wait might end up being worth it in more ways than one. According to Joel McHale, the cast isn’t just eyeing the movie… they’re also tossing around the idea of a follow-up limited series. Yep, the Greendale dream may not end with just one film. “I think there are some of us that would love to keep going,” McHale recently revealed. “And I would be like, ‘Great, if you guys want to do episodes, let us know.'”
However, he admitted that it’ll likely hinge on how well the movie performs, but the interest is there, and he’s definitely game. “I think that’ll probably depend on the success of a movie, but I think if there’s enough of a demand to do more. I don’t know what it would look like, but obviously the movie would have to inform a lot of that. I’m game, and I know a few others are game. I’m not going to tell you whom, but I would definitely do [more], they are always like, ‘Oh, a limited series!’ I would totally be up for it.”
Stay tuned for future updates. For now, you could build a blanket fort, grab some snacks, and relive your favorite moments as all six seasons of Community are streaming now on Peacock. Go ahead, Greendale is always accepting new (and returning) students.
