Taylor Sheridan fans are preparing to feast later this year with new seasons of Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Landman, but before his new wave of shows returns to Paramount+, the sequel to one of his best movies just got a devastating update. Although a Wind River sequel is in the works, it’s been revealed that writer/director Taylor Sheridan is not attached to the project in any capacity. He will instead be replaced by Kari Skogland (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), who will direct with a script from Patrick Massett and John Zinman. Production on the sequel wrapped more than two years ago, but it’s unclear when it will be released. After losing Renner and Olsen, Wind River 2 will star Scott Eastwood, Alan Ruck, and Jason Clarke.
Wind River was a major hit upon its release in 2017. The film debuted with strong scores of 87% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it also grossed $44 million at the box office against an exceptionally modest $11 million budget. Jeremy Renner was Taylor Sheridan’s first choice to play Cory Lambert in Wind River, but he originally declined the role due to a scheduling conflict. Renner was shooting Arrival at the time, the sci-fi epic directed by Denis Villeneuve. He then approached Chris Pine, who had to decline due to his role as Steve Trevor in the first Wonder Woman movie. This led to a slight delay that opened up Renner to return and star in the lead role. Sheridan previously worked with Pine on Hell or High Water, and he later worked with Renner on Mayor of Kingstown.
Taylor Sheridan’s New Movie Is Beginning To Take Shape
Earlier this summer, it was announced that Taylor Sheridan would pen the script for a new action movie, F.A.S.T. The film is currently set for release on April 23, 2027, and it stars a former U.S. special forces officer who is recruited by the DEA to take down CIA-protected drug dealers. Sheridan will reunite with his 1923 leading star Brandon Sklenar for the film, which also stars Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & The Six), LaKeith Stanfield (Knives Out), and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty).
It’s unclear when the Wind River sequel will be released.
