The mad research of one man is about to pay off, with Netflix officially setting a date for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. Prepare to feast your eyes on the monster maestro’s latest dive into sci-fi horror with the Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac-led production when the title officially rises from its grave and into selected theaters on October 17, followed by its streaming premiere just a few weeks later on November 7. It’s clear that the Academy Award-winning filmmaker is eying up another run at the award circuit with this one, considering its end-of-the-year timing and its double drop into theaters as well as Netflix.
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding del Toro’s reimagining of the iconic book penned by Mary Shelley. This is far from the first time the pages of the 1816 novel have made their way into screenplay form and ended up on the big screen, but with the visionary behind such critically acclaimed hits as Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and Nightmare Alley standing at the helm, it will certainly be its own unique retelling of the story. From what we’ve seen in teasers so far, Isaac’s Victor Frankenstein will recount to audiences the tale of how his creation came to life and precisely where it all went off the rails, with Elordi playing a gargantuan version of the monster.
After having previously worked with names like Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Tom Hiddleston, and Bradley Cooper, it won’t come as a surprise to know that del Toro set out to assemble yet another all-star lineup for his version of Shelley’s beloved tale. Joining Isaac and Elordi is an ensemble that also includes Mia Goth (Pearl), Ralph Ineson (The Fantastic Four: First Steps), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lars Mikkelsen (The Killing), Lauren Collins (Degrassi: The Next Generation), and Burn Gorman (Watcher).
Guillermo del Toro and Netflix Take Another Shot at the Oscars
Frankenstein is far from del Toro’s first team-up with Netflix, as the director and studio have previously worked together on feature-length and episodic productions in the past. In 2022, the duo released Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which puts a dark stop-motion twist on the iconic story. With voice work done by Ewan McGregor, John Turturro, Finn Wolfhard and more, the movie became an overnight success, and earned the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Additionally, del Toro also backed 2022’s horror anthology series, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, for the streamer. With the success of Pinocchio in his rearview mirror, the director is full steam ahead in hopes of making Frankenstein another award-winning production.
