Stars Hollow is coming back into the spotlight. In honor of Gilmore Girls’ 25th anniversary this October, a new documentary titled Searching For Stars Hollow is officially in the works, as per THR — though fans may notice two key absences. The project, from Ink On Paper Studios, wants to take a deep dive into the legacy of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s beloved dramedy, exploring “the show’s role in American cultural history” while offering never-before-seen interviews with cast members, crew members, writers, and directors.
Confirmed participants include Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore), Jared Padalecki (Dean Forester), and Chad Michael Murray (Tristin Dugray), along with Keiko Agena (Lane Kim), Sally Struthers (Babette Dell), Liz Torres (Miss Patty), Emily Kuroda (Mrs. Kim), Rose Abdoo (Gypsy), Kathleen Wilhoite (Liz Danes), Matt Jones (Morgan), Grant Lee Phillips (the town troubadour), director Jamie Babbit, writer-producer Stan Zimmerman, casting directors Jami Rudofsky and Mara Casey, and Gilmore Guys podcast host Kevin T. Porter.
But the catch? As of now, Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore) and Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore) are not attached to the documentary. The absence of the mother-daughter duo — the heart of the original series — is likely to sting for longtime fans hoping for a more traditional on-camera reunion.
What’s ‘Gilmore Girls’ About?
Running for seven seasons from 2000 to 2007, Gilmore Girls followed thirty something single mom Lorelai and her daughter Rory as they navigated life, love, and coffee-fueled conversations in the fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow. The show’s ensemble also included Melissa McCarthy, Scott Patterson, Sean Gunn, and the late Edward Herrmann. Directors Meghna Balakumar and Kevin Konrad Hanna are helming the doc, with The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg on board as executive producer and Jim Demonakos producing.
“The interviews that we’ve already conducted with the cast have been a delight,” Balakumar said in a statement. “We’ve shot more than 100 hours of footage and have already unearthed stories, commentary, critiques, and more. And we’re continuing to shoot more interviews in the coming months to present the most complete, full and truly new story of the show’s impact and legacy that is only possible at this historical moment.”
Demonakos added: “Searching For Stars Hollow will reveal how Gilmore Girls came to life, why it continues to resonate across generations, and how its unique blend of humor, heart and pop culture shaped a devoted worldwide fan community with an in-depth look at its creation and the connections it continues to foster.”
A release date for Searching For Stars Hollow has yet to be announced, though fans can already track the project’s pre-launch Kickstarter page for updates.
