Incredibles 3 was announced at last year’s D23 Expo, and now, courtesy of Pixar‘s presentation at this weekend’s Destination D23, we have a release window for the much-anticipated threequel. Don’t start lining up quite yet, because the animated pic isn’t set to make its superhero landing until 2028, a full decade after 2018’s Incredibles 2.
The announcement was made at Destination D23, a smaller-scale version of the Disney D23 Expo that takes place every other year. This year, it was held at Coronado Springs Resort, part of Orlando’s Disney World theme park. During their presentation, Pixar outlined their upcoming slate of films: Toy Story 5 and the beaver-body-swapping comedy Hoppers will be released next year, and the feline-themed Gatto will hit in 2027. 2028 “and beyond” will see the release of Incredibles 3 and Coco 2, as Pixar has had great success in recent years with sequels. Details on Incredibles 3 are sparse so far, but Brad Bird, who helmed the first two installments, will relinquish the director’s chair to Peter Sohn (Elemental), while Bird writes the script and executive produces.
What is ‘The Incredibles’ Franchise About?
The Incredibles takes place in a retro-styled world where superheroes battle supervillains; however, after a series of lawsuits, superheroes are outlawed. As 2004’s The Incredibles opens, two married ex-superheroes live in hiding: Bob Parr, alias Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) and Helen Parr, alias Elasti-Girl (Holly Hunter). They have three children, Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Spencer Fox), and baby Jack-Jack. When Bob is offered a chance to use his powers to make some money after losing his job, he gets the whole family drawn into a plot involving his former wanna-be sidekick Buddy (Jason Lee). The 2018 sequel sees Helen and Bob and their friend Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) recruited by a powerful corporation that intends to bring superheroes back into the public spotlight, only for a new mind-controlling villain to threaten the family…and the world.
The Incredibles franchise has been enormously successful, critically and financially. The first film holds a 97% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and grossed $631 million USD at the box office; the sequel has an almost-as-good 93% Fresh rating, and grossed a superhuman $1.2 billion. Disney is hoping that its animated sequels will stay hot at the box office: last year’s Inside Out 2 was the top-grossing movie of 2024, raking in $1.6 billion.
Incredibles 3 will be released in 2028.
