This has been a roller coaster of a week for Tomb Raider fans. After getting exciting news about the future of the franchise on TV, they will have to deal with a bittersweet new development. This week, Netflix decided to finally set a release date for the new season of its animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. But there will be nothing after that — Season 2 will be the last one of the show on the streamer. The new episodes will debut on the platform on December 11.
Along with the release date, Netflix also unveiled an official synopsis of the second and final season of the series, which reads:
“When adventurer Lara Croft (voiced by Hayley Atwell) discovers a trail of stolen African Orisha masks, she joins forces with her best friend Sam (Karen Fukuhara) to retrieve the precious artifacts. Lara’s thrilling new adventure takes her around the globe as she delves deeper into the hidden secrets of Orisha history, dodging the machinations of a dangerous and enigmatic billionaire who wants the masks for herself, while discovering these relics contain dark secrets and a power that defies logic. Power that may, in fact, be divine.”
The Orisha culture is a strong belief system that has extended to this day. The Orishas are entities that represent forces of nature, and they inspire several religions across the world. By focusing on the theme, the series has the chance of both introducing it to people who have never heard about it and showcasing how the culture of several African countries has been dismantled and reduced to simple aesthetic value by Western civilization.
One ‘Tomb Raider’ Falls, Another One Rises
Luckily for Tomb Raider fans, they won’t be left with nothing to watch for long. Earlier this week, Prime Video announced that the long-gestating series helmed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) will start filming next January. Details of the upcoming series are yet to be revealed, but Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) already celebrated becoming the new Lara Croft, addressed the performances of Angelina Jolie (Maria) and Alicia Vikander (Firebrand) in previous live-action movies, and stated that she’s “thrilled beyond measure.”
Aside from Atwell and Fukuhara, the Netflix animated series’ voice cast also features O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Eshu, Allen Maldonado (Heels) as Zip, and Earl Baylon (Arcane) as Jonah Maiava.
Netflix premieres the second and final season of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft on December 11. A trailer is yet to be unveiled.
