After more than a decade of false starts and development limbo, Tron is finally powering back up with Tron: Ares. The threequel, directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), stars Jared Leto as Ares, a powerful AI program who makes the jump from the digital world into reality. But while fans can expect dazzling visuals and a story built for 2025’s cultural moment, they won’t be seeing many familiar faces from Tron: Legacy. In a new interview, Rønning confirmed that the film isn’t bringing back several key characters — not because the filmmakers didn’t want them, but because some of the actors declined.
“These things are not only creative choices; sometimes actors don’t want to be in it anymore. There are different ways of looking at that, but I think the story fell into a place where we felt that we didn’t need the old characters to be front and centre. We wanted to take this into a new direction while, at the same time, honoring the universe that we’re in.”
That means no return for Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn or Cillian Murphy’s Dillinger Jr. The one exception? Jeff Bridges will reprise his role as Kevin Flynn, bridging the gap between the old and new generations of the franchise. Producer Justin Springer echoed Rønning’s sentiment, emphasizing that cameos for the sake of nostalgia wouldn’t serve the story. Although let’s be honest, they’re just saying this because they got turned down, aren’t they? You can’t fool us.
“We’re telling a story that’s 14 years later, and the most important thing is that we tell this new story in a way that works. To just throw cameos in, where it’s a parade of people that we love from this franchise, I just feel like it’s fan service that doesn’t serve the story. But we are definitely focused on ways to surprise the audience.”
Who Is in ‘Tron: Ares’?
Instead, the spotlight is firmly on Leto’s Ares and a roster of new characters played by Greta Lee (Past Lives), Evan Peters (X-Men), Jodie Turner-Smith (The Acolyte), Hasan Minhaj (It Ends with Us), Arturo Castro (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story) and Gillian Anderson (Sex Education), The new storyline arrives at a time when questions about AI, data surveillance, and the blurry line between digital and physical realities feel more relevant than ever. So basically, the plot is ChatGPT in the form of the guy from Thirty Seconds to Mars. Lord help us.
Tron: Ares hits theaters on October 10, 2025.
