Spider-Man fans got a jolt of excitement this week when a new set photo confirmed the reunion of Tom Holland with his longtime co-stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The upcoming Marvel epic, directed by Shang-Chi filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, will usher in a brand-new chapter for Holland’s Peter Parker—one marked by adulthood, isolation, and a dangerous rogues’ gallery waiting to strike.
The photo, which was shared via social media, shows Holland, Zendaya and Batalon posing with fans during a set visit. One thing that caught the eyes of fans? Batalon is wearing a Massachusetts Institute of Technology shirt, calling back to his character Ned’s acceptance to the school at the end of the last movie. That moment in No Way Home marked Peter’s heartbreaking decision to let both Ned and MJ walk away without remembering him, after Doctor Strange’s spell erased him from their lives. The acceptance letters to MIT represented a bright future for both characters—one that Peter chose not to be part of, in order to protect them.
Now, with Brand New Day set after high school, the new image suggests that Ned has followed through with his dream and is studying in Cambridge. Isn’t that nice? This does raise some questions questions about how Zendaya’s MJ and Batalon’s Ned will factor into Peter’s next adventure. Will they return to New York for a short visit? Or will Peter cross paths with them again in a far more complicated setting?
It has been confirmed that both actors will play “important roles” in the fourth Spider-Man film, even if their screentime may be limited. Given Peter’s new solo status in the MCU, having them back in the film is going to be a good way of highlighting the sacrifices he needs to make in order to protect the ones he loves.
What Do We Know About ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Holland’s first outing as Peter Parker post-high school, placing him squarely in the messiness of early adulthood while balancing the weight of being New York’s most important hero. On top of the return of our favorite trip, the movie will also feature Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, Mark Ruffalo, and Jon Bernthal.
With Scorpion confirmed as the main villain and the promise of Peter stepping into a new era, Brand New Day could finally answer the lingering question: will Spider-Man’s closest bonds ever be restored, or has Peter truly lost his friends forever?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31, 2026.
