‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’: New ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Off Series Will Release in Jan 2026!!

The wait for Westeros’ next chapter is almost over. After years of anticipation, HBO has finally set a release window for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff based on George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories. HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed to reporters after the 2025 Emmy Awards that the series will arrive in January 2026, putting an end to speculation after the show was delayed from its original 2025 debut.

“I’m going to say January. How about that?” Bloys teased when pressed about the long-awaited premiere.

The series adapts Martin’s fan-favorite novellas (and his own personal favorites too, the man is positively glowing when he talks about them) The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight, which were later collected into the book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The stories follow Ser Duncan the Tall, a wandering hedge knight, and his unlikely young squire, Egg, who harbors a surprising destiny of his own.

The cast includes Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, alongside Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings, and Sam Spruell. Though HBO hasn’t provided an official reason for the delay into 2026, the January release makes sense given earlier comments that the show would arrive “in winter.” By spacing it out from House of the Dragon Season 3 — now slated for June 2026 — the network avoids franchise fatigue while keeping Westeros in the conversation all year long.

How Will ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Be Different?

Unlike the sprawling dynastic warfare of Game of Thrones or the dragon-fueled spectacle of House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be smaller in scale and more intimate in storytelling, a nice change of pace. Fans can expect fewer castles and armies, but more character-driven tales of knighthood, loyalty, and the early Targaryen era.

For viewers unfamiliar with Martin’s novellas, the stripped-down approach may feel like a big change, but that’s part of the appeal. The Dunk and Egg stories are beloved for their heart and humor, with deeply human characters navigating the dangers of Westeros on a more personal scale. The timing of this release could prove crucial. With House of the Dragon facing mixed reactions to its second season — even Martin himself was critical of parts of it — A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms might be the fresh start fans have been craving.

By January 2026, it will have been more than a year since House of the Dragon Season 2 aired, making Seven Kingdoms the perfect bridge back into the world of Westeros before the Targaryens return in the summer.
