The neon lights and pastel suits with rolled up sleeves are coming back to theaters. Universal Pictures has set August 6, 2027, as the release date for Miami Vice, a new feature film reboot from Joseph Kosinski, the director behind Top Gun: Maverick and this year’s racing hit F1.
The movie, which will be shot for IMAX, is described as an exploration of “the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami,” drawing inspiration from the pilot episode and first season of the groundbreaking NBC television series that defined the era’s look, sound, and style. Casting is now underway, with production scheduled to begin next year.
At a recent Collider screening of F1: The Movie, Kosinski spoke about why the project matters to him. “Every other person who is my age, in 1985, when they were all looking at comic books or playing with Star Wars figures or Transformers toys, I was watching Miami Vice,” he said. “For me, that television show is a very important part of me growing up and introduced me to the work of Michael Mann. I have a soft spot for that era, having grown up in it. I did not grow up in Miami, but I’m very excited about that. I don’t want to say too much about it, but we’re working on it now.”
Kosinski even teased that after tackling fighter jets in Maverick and race cars in F1, he’s ready to embrace the final piece of the high-speed trifecta: “Usually, people say planes, cars, and obviously boats are next.” Boats, of course, were a defining symbol of the original Miami Vice.
What’s Miami Vice About?
Created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann, the original Miami Vice starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives working the drug-fueled streets of South Florida. It ran on NBC from 1984 to 1989, becoming a cultural phenomenon with its big hair, fast cars, and MTV-inspired soundtrack.
The series was previously adapted into a 2006 feature directed by Mann, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. While it earned $165 million worldwide against a $135 million budget, it was considered a box office disappointment. Kosinski’s reboot marks the franchise’s second big-screen outing. The new Miami Vice is produced by Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Kosinski, with a screenplay by Dan Gilroy (a recent Emmy winner for Andor) and Eric Singer (American Hustle), based on Yerkovich’s characters.
Miami Vice hits theaters on August 6, 2027.
