U.S. President Donald Trump has just announced a change that could very well alter the landscape of the Hollywood industry like never before. Trump took to his personal Truth Social account to officially announce that all movies produced outside the United States of America will be subject to a 100% tariff. The President first brought this up back in May and has not mentioned it since, but he has since decided to follow up on his initial word. It’s unclear at this time when this tariff would be implemented or how it would be enforced.
Trump says that “Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.’ California, with its weak and incompetent Governor [Gavin Newsom], has been particularly hard hit!” He continued, “Therefore, in order to solve this long-time, never-ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter.” This is all the President had to say at this time, but rest assured, there will be more developments on this situation in the coming days.
This is going to shake the Hollywood landscape to its core, if it’s even allowed to be put into effect. Some of the biggest movies in the world are produced outside the United States, including the next big Marvel tentpole, Avengers: Doomsday, which did not film any scenes on American soil. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, among other major blockbusters, is also filming entirely overseas. When Trump first proposed this in May, industry experts and economists predicted that something like this could completely halt production of major movies until the dust settles.
Donald Trump Is in a Feud With Jimmy Kimmel
This news comes not long after Trump feuded with Jimmy Kimmel, the late-night host who was fired by Disney for comments about the murder of Charlie Kirk. Trump celebrated Kimmel’s firing and then threatened to sue ABC last week when he was reinstated. Kimmel’s return produced strong viewership. After Kimmel was initially let go by the network, Trump also called for other late-night hosts like Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers to be fired. According to the President, this is due to “lack of talent and poor numbers,” and not because of any personal vendetta.
