
Kimberly Hébert Gregory, the actress who was best known for her role in HBO’s Vice Principals, has died at the age of 52, it has been announced. Her death was confirmed on October 3, with her ex-husband, actor Chester Gregory, posting a heartfelt tribute on Facebook.
“Kimberly Hébert Gregory / You Were Brilliance Embodied, / A Black Woman Whose Mind Lit Every Room, / Whose Presence Carried Both Fire And Grace,” he wrote. “You Taught Us Lessons In Courage, / In Artistry, In Resilience, / And In How To Keep Showing Up, / Even When Life Demanded More Than Its Share.”
Born in 1972 in Houston, Gregory pursued both the arts and academia, graduating from The High School for Performing and Visual Arts before studying psychology at Mount Holyoke College. She later earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago. Alongside her studies, she built a career in Chicago theater, where her performance in Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery earned her a 1998 Joseph Jefferson Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Her first major film appearance came in Chris Rock’s I Think I Love My Wife, and throughout her career she carved out a strong presence in television. Gregory guest-starred in acclaimed series including Grey’s Anatomy, Law & Order, Two and a Half Men, Gossip Girl, Barry, The Act, Dollface, Better Call Saul, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
On Vice Principals, she played Dr. Belinda Brown, a school principal caught between Danny McBride’s Neal Gamby and Walton Goggins’ Lee Russell. The role very quickly became a favorite with fans, as she managed to balance the humor, authority and vulnerability in a way that elevated the material.
Her former co-star Walton Goggins also took some time out to pay a truly heartfelt tribute to her on Instagram, remembering her both as a colleague and a friend. “I had the honor… the good fortune of getting to know, getting to spend months working with this Queen on Vice Principals,” he wrote. “She made me laugh like no other. A professional’s professional. A gatdamn SOPRANO that never missed a note.”
Gregory’s career was defined by her ability to bring depth and soul to every role, whether in comedy, drama, or theater. She is survived by her ex-husband and son.
