‘Miss Piggy’: Cole Escola, Emma Stone & Jennifer Lawrence to Produce Film on the Glamorous Muppet!!

The Muppets may be headed back to the big screen, with the ensemble’s leading lady finally taking center stage. Miss Piggy is set to headline her own movie with a script from Broadway sensation Cole Escola. Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are both producing the film.

Lawrence revealed the news on Bowen Yang and Matt RogersLas Culturistas podcast, stating, “I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just going to. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it.” When asked if she and Stone would also appear in the film, Lawrence, who was on the show to discuss her new film Die My Love, responded affirmatively, asserting that, “we have to.” Lawrence did not reveal any other details of the as-yet unannounced project. Escola recently won a Tony for their acclaimed performance as Mary Todd Lincoln in the Broadway play Oh, Mary!; Escola also wrote the play, a satirical, campy look at the Lincoln Presidency. They were also recently added to the cast of the third season of Netflix‘s One Piece.

Who Is Miss Piggy?

First introduced on a Herb Alpert TV special, Miss Piggy was a minor player in the Muppets, but gradually developed into the porcine diva beloved (and feared) by her fellow Muppets as The Muppet Show progressed. She’s a fashionista, she speaks a little French, and she knows karate and isn’t afraid to use it. She’s also in love with, and very possessive of, fellow Muppet Kermit the Frog, whether he likes it or not. She’s been a major player in all the Muppets’ big-screen features; she has an Esther Williams-like aqua-dance scene in The Great Muppet Caper, married Kermit (kinda) in The Muppets Take Manhattan, and subs in for Emily Crachit in The Muppet Christmas Carol. Her relationship with Kermit is decidedly on-and-off, with the characters frequently spending time apart; in 2011’s The Muppets, she’s moved to France to become an editor for Vogue magazine. Originally performed by Frank Oz, Piggy is currently performed by Eric Jacobson, who took over from Oz in 2002.

A Miss Piggy movie isn’t the only Muppet project in the pipeline. The Muppet Show is coming back for a one-off special hosted by pop star Sabrina Carpenter. The special will air on Disney+ in 2026, for The Muppet Show‘s 50th anniversary, and is intended as a springboard for an ongoing revival of the series.

A Miss Piggy movie is in development.
