If you’re waiting for another season of the high-octane mercenary action of Paramount+‘s Lioness, Netflix is angling for your streaming dollar. They’ve just greenlit Trigger Point, a new thriller series about a team of black-ops agents gone rogue, and the one man who’s determined to bring them to justice. Joel Edgerton is slated to star in the new series, which is in development.
The new A24 series (which bears no relation to the British police thriller series of the same name) will center around a team of former Tier One Special Forces Operators who’ve formed a private military contracting firm…as a cover for their real business, which is hiring out their finely-honed military skills out to the highest criminal bidder. Edgerton will play their leader, Red. However, there’s an FBI agent on their trail, and he won’t stop until he’s brought them down. The series was acquired by Netflix after a competitive auction process and subsequent bidding war; it has now been ordered straight-to-series and will receive an eight-episode first season.
What Can Joel Edgerton Be Seen in Recently?
International audiences got their first glimpse of Australian actor Edgerton as Owen Lars in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, a role he’s reprised several times since, most recently in the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries. He’s subsequently starred in productions like The Great Gatsby, Zero Dark Thirty, and The Green Knight. He currently stars in Apple TV‘s Dark Matter, a science fiction series about a man trapped in an alternate universe; it premiered in 2024, and a second season is in the works. His new drama, Train Dreams, premiered on Netflix this month; his performance as a railroad worker living in isolation has attracted widespread acclaim, and has him in the awards conversation this fall. He also stars in the psychological drama The Plague, which will open in limited release this Christmas before going wide in the New Year.
Trigger Point boasts an illustrious creative team. It will be written, showrun, and executive produced by Harrison Query, who just wrote the hit Prime Video actioner Heads of State; he is next set to write and produce the Paramount+ true crime chiller Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. Directing and executive producing the series is Jeremy Saulnier, the master of suspense behind thrillers like Blue Ruin, Green Room, and Rebel Ridge. It will also be executive produced by Joe Hipps and Patrick Macdonald for Cut To.
Trigger Point is in development at Netflix; no release date has yet been announced.
