Paramount and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster are developing a new entry in the hit found footage franchise Paranormal Activity, Deadline can confirm.
Blum will produce alongside Solana Films’ Oren Peli, the director of the original 2007 film, as well as James Wan, a fellow horror titan who is new to the franchise, coming to the project following the Blumhouse-Atomic Monster merger. Steven Schneider will exec produce for Room 101, alongside Michael Clear and Judson Scott for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, with Alayna Glasthal overseeing for the company.
Further details as to the eighth Paranormal Activity are under wraps, other than it being a priority project for Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, which will co-finance and co-produce, with Paramount handling worldwide distribution.
Marking the biggest found footage phenomenon since The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity launched with the micro-budget indie horror flick of the same name from Peli, which was an unexpected runaway hit, grossing around $193 million worldwide in one of the greatest box office returns for any horror film in the history of contemporary cinema. Centered on households haunted by demonic entities, the franchise grew to include seven films, with the most recent entry, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, releasing in 2021. The films have collectively grossed over $900 million globally.
The original Paranormal Activity was the film that put Blumhouse on the map, leading to further success with franchises like Insidious, Ouija, The Purge and Happy Death Day — not to mention myriad original one-offs — through which they gradually came to be one of the industry’s leading genre producers.
