Ahead of the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, marking the end of her time in James Cameron‘s blockbuster universe for now, Sigourney Weaver may have found her next big adventure. The Alien icon is currently in talks to join Sophie Turner in the new live-action Tomb Raider series at Prime Video, according to a new report. At this time, it’s unknown who she could be playing, but she’d mark the first big addition made to the high-profile video game adaptation since Turner was cast as Lara Croft over a year ago. The news comes just over one month before cameras begin rolling on January 19.
Tomb Raider, under the guidance of Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, has been gestating for some time now. The writer first signed on to bring the legendary Croft to the small screen at the start of 2023 and has been hard at work developing material since then through Story Kitchen, Amazon MGM, and Tomb Raider reboot developers Crystal Dynamics. Little is known about what her take on the series could entail, though she has teased a desire to revive the franchise’s old ’90s vibe. That could mean she’s looking more to replicate the feel of the original games that turned the franchise into an icon, rather than the grittier trilogy that would go on to inspire the Alicia Vikander-led movie and the animated series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
Joining Waller-Bridge among the creative team are Chad Hodge and Jonathan Van Tulleken, who both serve as executive producers and co-showrunners alongside her. Van Tulleken has also been tapped to direct, bringing a BAFTA-winning resume behind the camera that includes credits on FX‘s Emmy juggernaut Shōgun, Dope Thief, Upload, The Changeling, and more. Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins also executive produce through Wells Street Productions alongside Michael Scheel, Crystal Dynamica, Legendary Television, and Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson for Story Kitchen.
Sigourney Weaver Is Staying Busy on the Big Screen
Though she may be heading to television soon, Weaver has kept her cinematic schedule full. This Friday, she’ll appear alongside Mads Mikkelsen in the Hannibal star’s fantastical reunion with Bryan Fuller, Dust Bunny. Next week will then see her return to Pandora for Fire and Ash, joining Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and the rest of his family in the fight against the Ash People who wish to see the planet burn. The wait to see her in another massive cinematic franchise won’t be long from there, with The Mandalorian & Grogu adding her to the fold alongside Pedro Pascal and fellow Star Wars franchise newcomer, Jeremy Allen White. That film will fly into theaters on May 22, 2026.
Tomb Raider begins production in January.
