True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto and Lone Survivor director Peter Berg are joining forces to adapt Brad Thor’s upcoming action-thriller novel, Cold Zero, for Netflix. The streaming giant secured the rights to the project by leveraging its longstanding first-look deal with Berg and his production company, Film 44. Ezra Emanuel (Strange Darling) is also coming on board to produce the film, while executive producers include Thor and Elizabeth Rogers.
According to the initial report, a release date has not yet been announced. Thor’s novel is hitting the shelves on February 10 and tells the story of a high-tech commercial airliner that crash-lands in the brutal, sub-zero wilderness of the North Pole. The catastrophe evolves into a global crisis when it’s revealed that the plane was carrying revolutionary technology capable of reshaping global power.
The news of the Netflix adaptation follows the massive success of Berg’s limited series, American Primeval, which spent 4 weeks in the streaming giant’s Global Top 10. The director is currently in post-production on The Mosquito Bowl, a World War II drama starring Bill Skarsgård and Nicholas Galitzine, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis, slated for release later this year. Pizzolatto, on the other hand, was recently involved in a heated bidding war for an upcoming mystery series at Netflix set to star Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser. He also wrote, directed, and produced the forthcoming drama Easy Waltz, which stars Vince Vaughn, Al Pacino, Kate Mara, and others, and premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.
Another One of Brad Thor’s Works Is Making Its Way to Television
In an interview with WECT News, the #1 New York Times bestselling thriller author discussed his iconic character, Scot Harvath, who first appeared in his 2002 novel, The Lions of Lucerne, and is set to receive his own TV series. The adaptation was first announced in 2024 in a news report, which revealed that John Wick director Chad Stahelski had been tapped to helm the series. He is joined by executive producers Howard Gordon (Homeland) and Alex Gansa, with Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher) serving as the writer.
A major follow-up to the series came when Thor revealed that scripts were being finalized in June 2025. The author acknowledged that the project had been years in the making and said he would receive the cast once the scripts are approved. Thor’s Scot Harvath novels follow the high-stakes adventures of the titular character, an ex-Navy SEAL and intelligence officer, and have sold 20 million copies worldwide. 20 out of the 23 books are New York Times bestsellers, with multiple having debuted at #1. The latest installment in the series is Edge of Honor, published in July 2025, while the 25th title, Choke Point, arrives in June 2026.
Cold Zero is slated for publication on February 10.
