At long last, Jason Momoa‘s dream DCU role is finally getting the spotlight. A new teaser for the upcoming Supergirl shares the former Aquaman star’s reaction to getting to play the intergalactic bounty hunter crashing into Kara Zor-El’s (Milly Alcock) story. It also gives fans the best look yet at the anti-hero, who previously appeared shrouded in darkness in the original trailer. Complete with an almost comically big cigar and a jet-powered motorcycle built to ride through the fire and flames, he’s ready to make quite the impression when the film arrives on the big screen on June 26.
All Momoa had to say when asked about playing Lobo was “Finally.” He’s been linked to the Main Man for years, and his casting after James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins of the superhero cinematic universe may have been one of the DCU‘s worst-kept secrets. It’s fair to say this is a role the Minecraft Movie star has been itching to play for a long time as a fan of the original comic character, and he leans into it in the teaser, delivering a wicked laugh befitting of the character. Complete with the film’s theme, Blondie‘s “Call Me,” playing in the background, this new look is a further showcase of how this depiction of the Woman of Tomorrow will be embracing the punk rock aesthetic with help from the intimidating, super-powered biker.
The quest to bring Lobo to the big screen has been a long one, despite the interest in the character. In 2009, Warner Bros. originally had Guy Ritchie in mind to bring the bounty hunter to life in a solo film, an intriguing fit considering the director’s penchant for gritty, violent, and stylish action as seen in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Transformers franchise helmer Michael Bay was also in consideration for a Lobo movie, and Dwayne Johnson was once the studio’s choice to don the jacket, but none of the attempts amounted to anything. The only person to ever play him in live-action, in the end, was Emmett J. Scanlan in Season 2 of SyFy‘s short-lived Krypton series. His arrival in Supergirl, with an actor who’s genuinely passionate about the character, could be the beginning of a long and fruitful future for the Main Man in theaters. If Gunn considers a Lobo solo movie, there’s already one director who’s thrown his hat in the ring for it — Bullet Train and The Fall Guy helmer David Leitch.
What to Expect From ‘Supergirl’ and Lobo’s Role in the Movie
First introduced in the 1980s, Lobo eventually evolved into DC‘s more chaotic answer to The Punisher, with a muscular frame, black dreads, red, pupilless eyes, and a mercurial temperament. He’s a bit hard to pin down, being self-indulgent and wrathful, yet always true to his word as a bounty hunter and sporting powers to rival those of Superman himself. He adds an interesting wrinkle to Supergirl, which will follow the Woman of Tomorrow comic storyline. Set on Kara’s 23rd birthday, the film follows Supergirl on a journey throughout the galaxy with Krypto to celebrate, until she meets the young Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley). The girl recruits the Kryptonian into a quest for revenge against the ruthless space pirate, Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), one that promises to be a fun, wild, and emotional ride for the more cynical hero. Craig Gillespie is at the helm of the much-anticipated adaptation, penned by Ana Nogueira.
