There can be only one — and right now, that one is Henry Cavill. The actor is officially deep into production on the Highlander reboot, and new set footage has surfaced showing Cavill in action as Connor MacLeod. The video, shared online, captures scenes filming outside the Tower of London, with Cavill riding a motorcycle through the streets before later appearing to get struck by a car in what looks like a dramatic sequence.
Also spotted in connection with the project is Jeremy Irons, marking a reunion for the two former DC stars. Irons previously played Alfred opposite Cavill’s Superman in the DC Extended Universe, and now he’s stepping into a very different role. In Highlander, Irons is set to portray the villainous leader of the Watchers, an organization tied to the centuries-spanning mythology of the franchise. And that’s not the only familiar face from Cavill’s superhero past.
Russell Crowe, who played Jor-El in Man of Steel, will also reunite with Cavill in the reboot. This time, Crowe will take on the role of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, the legendary mentor figure to Connor MacLeod. Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan, who shared the screen in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, are also part of the ensemble. WWE star Drew McIntyre has been cast as Angus MacLeod, Connor’s brother. Additional cast members include Siobhán Cullen, Jun Jong-seo, Nassim Lyes, Kevin McKidd, Marisa Abela, and Djimon Hounsou.
Why Is Henry Cavill in ‘Highlander’?
For director Chad Stahelski, Cavill was the perfect casting choice. “My selling point to [Henry] was, look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation. So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc… and you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts.”
Last summer, Cavill added:
“Highlander! That is taking all of my focus. It’s a project that I’m extremely excited about. This character is going to be a lot of fun to play, and I’m loving working with Chad Stahelski. He is a very talented man.”
