Synopsis – A small goat with big dreams gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to join the pros and play roarball, a high-intensity, co-ed, full-contact sport dominated by the fastest, fiercest animals in the world.
My Take – With Zootopia 2 (2025) officially becoming the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time and Sing 3 (2027) being wildly anticipated, talking animals features are all the hype currently, so understandably, Sony Pictures Animation, still reeling in the massive success of K-Pop Demon Hunters (2025), would also attempt to carve out a spot in the space and rake in the moolah while the opportunity’s hot.
After all they have also raised the bar for animated flicks with the Oscar winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and it’s much acclaimed sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), with their storytelling approach, casting and breathtaking unique signature animation.
This time around turning their attention to a real-life inspired underdog story that too of NBA superstar Stephen Curry, who acts as a producer and has a performing role, and builds upon his earlier career comments about how he was too skinny and too small to make it as a pro. Only replacing him with a small goat who dares to dream to make it big in basketball-inspired game dominated by much larger and faster animals. And blend with the right dose of humor, emotion and ambition, we have yet another instant crowd-pleaser that delivers a genuinely satisfying dose of heartfelt entertainment.
Sure, co-writers Aaron Buchsbaum and Teddy Riley‘s screenplay mostly plays like a generic animated sort of-comedy that could have come from any number of second-to-fourth-tier studios, and deliberately checks all the boxes needed to make it work, but director Tyree Dillihay, known for his work on animated series like ‘Good Times’ and ‘Bob’s Burgers‘, ensures that what the film lacks in originality is compensated by a fresh energy, witty humor, fantastic voice cast, vibrant palette, stunning animation, and wholly fresh design.
It also helps that the pacing remains consistently sharp for 100 minutes, never allowing the narrative to lose momentum. For children, this will be a visually vibrant, fast-paced ride filled with excitement and humor. For adults, especially those who walked in unsuspecting like me, the film proves to be far more relatable than anticipated.

Set in a world of anthropomorphic animals, where the biggest sport is Roarball, a fast-paced game reminiscent of basketball, the story follows a young goat named Will Harris (voiced by Caleb McLaughlin), who lives in a tiny apartment and works as a fast-food delivery boy. In a sport ruled by size, speed and strength, Will harbors a not-so-secret dream of making it to the big leagues, particularly Vineland Thorns, that employs his idol, black panther Jett Fillmore (voiced by Gabrielle Union), a champ close to retirement but determined to win the league.
Opportunity eventually comes knocking when one of Will’s videos which sees him dominating Andalusian horse Mane Attraction (voiced by Aaron Pierre), a MVP of the league, at a local court goes viral. Prompting Vineland Thorns’s warthog owner Florence “Flo” Everson (voiced by Jenifer Lewis) to sign him and join her struggling team.
However, realizing his dream isn’t going to be as easy as it seems. As Will is not just laughed at because of his size and considered a publicity stunt but also has to earn his place alongside Indian rhinoceros Archie Everhardt (voiced by David Harbour), giraffe Lenny Williamson (voiced by Stephen Curry), ostrich Olivia Burke (voiced by Nicola Coughlan), Komodo dragon Modo Olachenko (voiced by Nick Kroll), and Jett, who are dealing with own set of insecurities amidst the losses.
The film is built around a simple but clever idea. In a world dominated by big animals like panthers, gorillas, rhinos and chimps, a literal goat rises to become the “Greatest Of All Time.” Like other animated films, this one too is centered on spreading a positive message, urging kids to never give up on their dreams and reach for the stars. A familiar message that the film delivers in spades.

Though the film is mostly focused on the sweet-natured and earnest hero, the most refreshing and surprising elements of the story is its flawed female hero. Jett is fierce, ambitious and driven, a one-woman army in a team sport. She is an original “GOAT” who struggles to trust others, choosing instead to carry everything on her own shoulders.
A character element which helps in developing the relationship between Jett and Will. Will’s energy is infectious, and his mission is to remind her of why she started playing in the first place and how Roarball, much like life, is ultimately about teamwork, allowing her to learn on relying others.
Surprisingly, despite the tight runtime, the film manages to flesh out its supporting characters effectively. Each team member gets their moment to shine and faces their own internal struggle to overcome. This adds much-needed depth to the characters and raises the emotional stakes, enhancing the impact of the underdog story.
However, the true highlight of the show is the stunning animation, which has become a hallmark of Sony Pictures Animation’s work. The film pops with its breathtaking comic-book-come-to-life design and gloriously colorful landscapes. While it shares the style and tone of its predecessors, it energizes the Roarball arena with new vibrancy. The arenas are beautifully designed and rank among the most creative basketball courts ever imagined.
It also helps that the excellent voice cast led by Caleb McLaughlin and Gabrielle Union, are equally well-supported by David Harbour, Aaron Pierre, Stephen Curry, Nicola Coughlan, Nick Kroll, Patton Oswalt, Eduardo Franco, Sherry Cola, Jenifer Lewis, Jelly Roll, Bobby Lee and Jennifer Hudson. On the whole, ‘Goat‘ is a visually stunning underdog sports story that wins hearts with its humor and relatable storytelling.
