‘Thunder Road’: Dennis Quaid to Star in AMC’s NASCAR Drama!!

AMC is getting into the NASCAR business, and it’s doing it with a pretty familiar kind of TV hook: family legacy, old rivalries, and a larger-than-life patriarch trying to hold everything together. It’s like Yellowstone meets Days of Thunder. It’s colossal prestige Dad TV. That sort of setup can go in a lot of directions, but this one just got a lot more real with a major star signing on.

Dennis Quaid has been set to star in AMC’s NASCAR drama Thunder Road, from Young Guns and The Highwayman writer John Fusco, and Deadline reports that the project is in fast-track development, with the writers’ room already open and production expected to begin this summer. The outlet also notes that Quaid’s casting significantly strengthens the show’s chances of officially moving forward. Deadline reports the plot as:

Thunder Road follows the multi-generational saga of the Whitlock family, whose legacy in stock car racing is as deep as the family’s ties to the southern hill country roots that shaped them. The series features family dynamics, fierce rivalries, and the untold stories behind one of America’s most iconic sports. On the show, Quaid will play racing legend Duane Whitlock aka “The Wrecking Ball,” a towering figure who built a racing empire from a legacy of moonshine runs and dirt tracks and refuses to let it die. The series is further described as a story about a blue-collar dynasty at the edge of extinction — and the old king fighting to hold onto his crown.

What Has Dennis Quaid Appeared In Recently?

Quaid recently starred alongside Reacher‘s Alan Ritchson in War Machine, which has proven to be Netflix‘s biggest film of 2026 to date. Last year, having just wrapped the movie, Quaid spoke enthusiastically about the movie and working with Ritchson.

“I had a blast down there in Australia for a couple of weeks,” Quaid told MovieWeb while promoting his upcoming western drama Broke. “It was great, because I got to play the general and I never got my uniform dirty at all. Wonderful. Alan was up to his chest in mud. He’s really good in this, and it’s going to be wild to watch.”
