Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is burning bright in the new trailer for Man on Fire. The Netflix adaptation of the A.J. Quinnell book sees the Wonder Man star thrown into chaos in the urban jungles of Brazil. All eight episodes of the series will premiere later this month. Ahead of the show’s April 30 release date on Netflix, the streamer has unleashed its most brutal look at the latest John Creasy adaptation yet.
As the trailer opens, John Creasy (Abdul-Mateen) is in a bad place. His Special Forces days are over, and he’s trying to live a quiet life driving a forklift in a warehouse. Unfortunately, the noises in his head, the result of his untreated PTSD, are as loud as ever; that’s why he accepts a job offer from old military buddy Paul Rayburn (Bobby Cannavale, Scarpetta). That job takes him to Brazil as a bodyguard, where he finds he has more in common with his young charge than he ever anticipated. When she’s put in danger, Creasy’s going to explode into action like never before. The series also stars Billie Boullet (A Small Light), Alice Braga (Dark Matter), Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire), and Paul Ben-Victor (Flight Risk); all seven episodes will drop on Netflix on April 30.
What Does Series Creator Kyle Killen Have to Say About ‘Man on Fire’?
Collider had the opportunity to speak to Kyle Killen, the creator and showrunner of Man on Fire, earlier this year. He had nothing but praise for leading man Abdul-Mateen, who is also an executive producer on the series: “He has a strength and charisma that draws you in even when he’s playing a character trying to keep people out. Creasy is so scarred from the events in his past that he’s unwilling to let anyone get close. It takes a special actor to make that magnetic. Yahya is exactly that special actor.” Killen also praised director Steven Caple Jr. (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), who will helm the first episodes of the series, noting that he “understood the assignment and guided us to something that feels fresh and original while also feeling connected to its roots. That’s no easy task, and we’re incredibly fortunate we found a director who was up to it.”
Man on Fire is based on a series of novels starring John Creasy by the late Philip Nicholson, who wrote under the pen name A.J. Quinnell. It was first brought to the screen in a 1987 Italian film starring Scott Glenn as Creasy; more famously, Tony Scott filmed it in 2004 with Denzel Washington in the lead role.
Man on Fire premieres on Netflix on April 30.
