‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2: Desmond Harrington’s Joey Quinn Promoted to Series Regular!!

In every iteration of the Dexter franchise, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) has had both friends and enemies. Such is often the case for a serial killer pretending to be a normal person. As a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, Dexter is calm and quiet, outwardly appearing like the kind of guy people can trust and confide in. However, he’s also a little odd, and while many, like Detective Angel Batista (David Zayas), considered him harmless, others, such as James Doakes (Erik King), have glimpsed the cracks in his facade to uncover the “Dark Passenger” beneath.

Then there’s Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington), a homicide detective who had his suspicions about Dexter in the past, only to ultimately stop pursuing them. That decision could change, because Harrington, who had a couple of cameos in Season 1 of Dexter: Resurrection, has just been promoted to a series regular on the Paramount+ revival. With Batista now gone, odds are high that Quinn will be investigating his colleague’s death. What will happen if he uncovers the truth about Dexter’s presence in New York and the reason why Batista was there?

Joey Quinn and Dexter Morgan Have a Tense Relationship in the Original Series

Joseph “Joey” Quinn first shows up in Dexter during the original series’ third season. When he’s partnered with Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter), he quickly falls for Dexter’s foul-mouthed sister, but his relationship with Dexter is another story. Quinn isn’t a big fan of Dexter, merely tolerating his presence, but all of that changes after Rita’s (Julie Benz) shocking death in the Season 4 finale. Inwardly, Quinn wonders if Dexter may have murdered Rita, but drops the idea once he starts dating Debra. Quinn might have suspicions about whether something more is going on with Dexter, but his life is such a mess that it’s not at the forefront of his mind, and Dexter always does enough to stay on his good side.

While Quinn doesn’t appear in Dexter: New Blood, the character returns via a few scenes in Dexter: Resurrection Season 1. The first sees Batista down in Miami, revealing to Quinn and Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee) that he’s retiring but leaving out the fact that he’s going to turn his pursuit of Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher into his new full-time career. When Batista gets involved with detectives in New York City, a curious Claudette Wallace (Kadia Sarif) calls Quinn, looking for information about Batista, only to learn that he’s not in the Big Apple on official police business.

Desmond Harrington’s Promotion to Series Regular in ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 Hints at a Bigger Threat

As soon as Batista began his single-minded pursuit of Dexter, fans feared the worst. Uncovering Dexter’s true identity has often spelled certain doom for other characters; just ask Doakes or Maria LaGuerta (Lauren Vélez). Towards the end of Dexter: Resurrection, those fears were confirmed when Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage) killed Batista. That shocking twist may have allowed Dexter to escape discovery once more, but it comes with an immense amount of guilt attached. While the loss of a man Dexter once considered a true friend will eat away at him, Batista’s demise will also give Quinn a reason to come to New York himself.

Batista’s death also potentially opens a bigger can of worms for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, since the demise of a homicide detective can’t be buried so easily. Quinn may have looked the other way before regarding his suspicions about Dexter, but Batista’s death changes things. However, if Harrington’s promotion to series regular means Quinn will show up in New York, the detective’s life will be in danger, especially with the New York Ripper (Brian Cox), as well as a new threat, the Five Borough Killer, played by Dan Stevens, on the loose. As long as Dexter: Resurrection continues, Dexter Morgan’s safety is guaranteed, but the same can’t be said for anyone else, especially someone who refuses to let the truth about what happened to a beloved friend die.
