When Keanu Reeves’ John Wick first debuted in 2014, no one could have imagined it would blow up into a franchise full of prequels and sequels. With four exciting films, director Chad Stahelski brought John’s wrath to the High Table and joy to millions of action-fans around the world. So, while John Wick Chapter 4 killed off the titular character, fans have been expecting him to make a grand return nonetheless.
Fans clamored for his return, and soon the news came that a fifth movie was in the works with both Stahelski and Reeves set to return. With a complete character arc spanning four films, it’s hard to imagine what will bring John Wick back from the dead, but it seems the team has finally cracked the story. While we know the fifth installment is in the works, no concrete updates were revealed as to casting or story. But that changes now, as Lionsgate film head Adam Fogelson has revealed to Business Insider, “Chad and Keanu have an idea that they think can be really exciting,” he said. While he didn’t commit to a timeline, he teased that the Donnie Yen-led Caine spin-off and animated prequel would both come out first. He explained:
“There are a lot of steps, so I wouldn’t want to put a timeline on it. But in terms of finding a core idea, they seem to have landed on something that they are excited about, and now we’ll see.”
What to Expect From ‘John Wick 5’?
We can most certainly expect brutal action and a solid story. While plot details are kept tightly under wraps, fans can expect to see John in a totally new light. Stahelski previously teased that the fifth chapter will be “really different,” saying, “The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up. So the only way to do a 5 is to have a new story that involves John Wick… It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy fuck… I gotta see that.’”
As for characters, it remains to be seen whether spin-off characters like Ana de Armas’s Ballerina make a return or not, same with John’s long-time frenemy Winston (Ian McShane). The John Wick franchise has grown leaps and bounds with spin-offs like Ballerina, the prequel series The Continental, the upcoming Caine spin-off, and an animated series. It’ll be interesting to see where John’s story leads us in his ever-growing world.
