ABC is moving ever closer to solidifying its slate of shows for the 2026-2027 television season. Before today, there were three shows still awaiting their fates at the Disney-owned network: the Scott Speedman-led crime drama procedural R.J. Decker, Tim Allen‘s big return to sitcoms, Shifting Gears, and the long-awaited revival of Scrubs. While the former remains on the bubble, with its chances looking dimmer by the day, the other two now know where they’re heading going forward. Allen again performed well enough on linear television to earn a third round, and, as expected, the diagnosis is also quite good for the return of the beloved medical comedy.
JD (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison) will officially be back for Season 2 of the Scrubs continuation, technically marking its 11th season overall. It’s not necessarily surprising that the series is getting another shift, either, after receiving a healthy viewership driven by love for Bill Lawrence‘s original hit. For this season, it stood as the highest-rated comedy telecast on any network in the critical 18-49 demographic while drawing over 11 million total viewers across all platforms in its first 35 days by Nielsen’s measure. Although there’s no word on how many episodes will be produced, expectations are that the doctors will once again get a limited run like their 9-episode return.
The Scrubs reboot finally brought viewers back to Sacred Heart after years of rumors and questions about a reunion for its medical staff. Scrubbing in together for the first time in well over a decade, JD and Turk are now at the top of the ladder as Chief of Medicine and Chief of Surgery, respectively, navigating a new era of medical care together. Although so much has changed, from the medicine to the interns, their friendship has stood the test of time, and it helps them through a new set of challenges that bring more laughter, drama, and a few tears along the way. In the eyes of both critics and audiences, the show hasn’t skipped a beat in its long absence, earning a Certified Fresh 89% on the Tomatometer and a 93% on the Popcornmeter at Rotten Tomatoes. Collider’s Greer Riddell gave it an 8/10 in her review, praising it for leaning into “the absurdity, heart, and friendships” that made the original so special.
What to Expect From Season 2 of the ‘Scrubs’ Reboot
Keeping the beating heart of Scrubs alive is most of the original cast, including Braff, Faison, Sarah Chalke, John C. McGinley, and Judy Reyes, alongside Robert Maschio, Neil Flynn, Phill Lewis, and Christa Miller. However, it also features an extensive slate of talented newbies for the veterans of Sacred Heart to impart their “wisdom” on. Joel Kim Booster, Vanessa Bayer, Rachel Bilson, Jacob Dudman, Lisa Gilroy, Ava Bunn, David Gridley, Amanda Morrow, Layla Mohammadi, Michael James Scott, X Mayo, and Andy Ridings round out the staff. Even the creative team features fresh blood, with Lawrence stepping back and serving as an executive producer while Aseem Batra takes the reins as showrunner.
With Season 2 now confirmed, one thing viewers can expect is potentially more of Dr. Cox. McGinley confirmed in a previous interview that his schedule didn’t quite line up to be around as much as planned for the revival, particularly thanks to another new Lawrence-created series, Rooster. “I don’t want to put the cart before the horse, but I think, God willing, for Season 2 on both of them, schedules will line up so that Dr. Cox can be around Scrubs quite a bit more,” he said. In more certain terms, Lawrence had also previously promised the return of another fan-favorite who couldn’t make it to the reunion’s first run — Dr. Bob Kelso, played by Ken Jenkins. What’s certain is that the Scrubs mastermind and the cast have a lot more plans for their latest stint at Sacred Heart.
All episodes of the Scrubs reboot are currently streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
