Since 2021, HBO‘s The White Lotus has thrived by putting dazzling casts of actors in extravagant vacation destinations and watching the chaos unfold over a week as the guests and their bad behavior run up against the put-upon employees of each resort. Originally created by Mike White as a limited series, it’s now become an Emmy juggernaut event, with new stars heading to new locations, from Hawaii to Italy, Thailand, and now France for Season 4, to satirize the ultra-wealthy and the darkness that lies beneath their picture-perfect facades. Filming began on the latest outing back in April, with a little twist that expands the scope of the series to revolve around the Cannes Film Festival. While that work continues, however, Netflix‘s rival vacation-centric comedy is gearing up for another round of trips with friends.
During a fireside chat at the BANFF World Media Festival on Monday, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for US and Canada, Jinny Howe, revealed that the smash-hit The Four Seasons has been renewed for a third season. The news comes less than three weeks after Tina Fey and company departed for Season 2 back on May 28 and instantly traveled back onto the Top 10, racking up over 24.4 million views along the way in just its first two weeks. Even without Steve Carell, this group of six friends is still evidently a fan-favorite hang that the streamer isn’t ready to say goodbye to. Fey joined fellow co-creators Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield in celebrating with an official statement, saying, “We are thrilled to be able to bring a third season of The Four Seasons to life. Thank you to everyone who watched. Middle-aged people, LFG!”
Unlike The White Lotus, which debuts a new hotel from the titular chain each season, The Four Seasons is based on the film of the same name by Alan Alda and follows six friends who come together every season for a group vacation. After Season 1 saw the tight-knit unit grapple with issues in their dynamic and ultimately witness the death of their pal, Nick (Carell), before the journey was over, Season 2 has them navigating this complicated new chapter together. They decide to carry on their tradition, each grieving and honoring Nick in their own way as they take trips from the Jersey Shore to New York, Italy, and beyond. With a baby now in tow too, they each take new steps on their own individual journeys while learning to let go and think about something else in each other’s company on the misadventures of a lifetime.
‘The Four Seasons’ Season 2 Was a Big Improvement With Critics
Season 3 will almost certainly see the return of the same beloved Four Seasons friend group, including Fey, Will Forte, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Colman Domingo, Marco Calvani, and Erika Henningsen. However, the final episode also introduced a potential seventh member of the group — David Tennant. The beloved Doctor Who star plays Gianpiero, Anne’s charming neighbor in Italy and potential love interest who is positioned as her perfect counterpart. In an interview with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub after the launch of Season 2, Fisher and Wigfield confirmed that, “We have a lot of fun ideas for what we would do with a Season 3, and I think, definitely, if it were possible, David would be a big part of that.” Expectations will be high for whatever the creative trio cooked up next, especially after their second outing vastly improved on the first in the eyes of critics, with a stellar Certified Fresh score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
All episodes of The Four Seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.
