‘The Passion of the Christ’: Mel Gibson’s R-Rated Classic Sets Theatrical Re-Release Before Long-Awaited Sequel!!

The last few years have been relatively quiet for Oscar-winning actor/director Mel Gibson, who most recently starred in the 2025 crime thriller, Hunting Season, which is available to rent or purchase on Prime Video. Before Hunting Season, Gibson was starring in at least two action movies a year, but things have slowed down for the star now that he’s working on not one, but two of the most ambitious projects of his career at the same time. Gibson is returning to direct a pair of follow-ups to his 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ, which are coming to theaters in 2027 and 2028. First up is The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One, which will be released on May 5, 2027, and following it is The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two, which will be released on May 25, 2028.

Production wrapped on The Resurrection of the Christ films back in May after shooting back to back across Italy and other locations, and to help build hype for the return of Gibson’s historical epic, the first film is officially coming back to theaters. That’s right fans, later this year, The Passion of the Christ will return to theaters on September 17, and those who see the movie in theaters will also be treated to a sneak peek at The Resurrection of Christ: Part One. The 2004 film has been fully remastered in 4K and enhanced with Dolby Atmos sound, so it will be an entirely different experience than it was 22 years ago. Lionsgate has even put together an entirely new, remastered trailer for the film’s return to theaters.

How Much Money Did ‘The Passion of the Christ’ Make?

To this day, The Passion of the Christ is one of the most profitable movies ever made. The film cost $30 million to make, which was no small budget 22 years ago, but it proved to be worth this investment and more when it grossed over $600 million at the global box office. The film will have a chance to add to its theatrical total in two months, when it will continue to climb the list as one of the highest-grossing historical epics ever made. It’s still among the highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time.
