International and interpersonal tensions are rising in season 4 of The Diplomat. The new season of the Netflix political thriller series is set to premiere next month. Before all eight episodes drop on October 15, we’ve got a new look at season 4 in its first trailer, showing us what trans-Atlantic trouble and trickery Emmy nominee Keri Russell is getting into this time.
Last season saw the “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom at the breaking point, as Grace Penn (Allison Janney) has acceded to the Presidency, despite being secretly complicit in a deadly false flag attack perpetuated against a British warship. She promptly chose veteran diplomat Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) as her own Vice President, putting a strain on his marriage with US Ambassador to the UK Kate Wyler (Russell). That strain is soon exacerbated by rising international intrigue, as a Russian submarine sinks in British waters with a new superweapon, the Poseidon, on board…only for the Poseidon to mysteriously disappear from the wreck, putting Russia on a war footing with the UK. That only led to the most shattering revelation of all: President Penn and Hal had secretly conspired to steal the Poseidon.
Now, in the season 4 trailer, the fallout hits. Kate confronts Hal over his deception, and the escalating feedback loop of realpolitik that ensues when he and the hardheaded President Penn work together. She’s worried it’s leading to a collision with volatile UK Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) that could end up in a global war. Penn’s First Gentleman, the louche Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), is feeling the strain, too, and it might put him in Kate’s orbit. Meanwhile, as alliances and relationships crumble, Kate’s colleagues, idealistic diplomat Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh) and cynical CIA operative Eidra Park (Ali Ahn), might be resuming their own romance. Can Kate defuse this ticking geopolitical time bomb, or is it about to blow up in everyone’s faces? You’ll have to tune into Netflix on October 15 to find out.
