In the modern age of television, fantasy shows have brought a thrill unlike anything we have ever seen in quite some time. But beyond the scope of shows like Game of Thrones and The Wheel of Time, there is a different genre that offers up an alternate reality — just one devoid of dragons and sorceresses. Dystopian dramas offer viewers an insight into an alternate reality, separate from what we are currently used to. Oftentimes, humankind, as we know it, in these stories, teeters dangerously on the brink of total annihilation. While AMC‘s The Walking Dead and HBO‘s The Last of Us throw up such a reality via a biological virus, shows like Prime Video‘s Fallout bring on a post-apocalyptic reality brought on by nuclear decimation.
However, given the advancement of human technology, it is quite clear that humanity could self-destruct in more ways than one. Streaming giant Netflix has, for several seasons now, offered up an anthology series that should have viewers weary of their phones and other pieces of technology in their lives, helpful or not. The mind-bending drama in question is Black Mirror, a series which has been able to craft a distinctly modern niche for itself. Created by Charlie Brooker, the anthology is mainly speculative fiction that explores some of the plausible, dark, and unintended consequences of modern technology, which has become so infused with human behavior and society.
Having premiered over a decade ago in 2011, Black Mirror continued to enjoy success with its seventh season, which arrived last year, continuing that trend. The anthology series is famed for telling self-contained stories and with Black Mirror Season 8 now officially in production, viewers can look forward to more. Beyond that, the new season is poised to feature a rising English star in its next chapter. Per What’s On Netflix, Emma Laird, who enjoyed her breakout role in Taylor Sheridan‘s Paramount+ series, Mayor of Kingstown, is set to join the cast for Black Mirror Season 8. The Crowded Room star will feature in an upcoming episode of the new season which is currently filming in the United Kingdom.
Who is Behind the Scenes for ‘Black Mirror’?
Brooker‘s series finds brilliant ways of exploring how uncomfortable it will be, and horrible in some sense, should technology and humanity end up colliding. Other details on Season 8, such as episode count and other stars, remain firmly under wraps. Brooker will return once more to write and executive produce the series alongside Bisha K. Ali (Ms. Marvel). Jessica Rhoades, who recently expressed “excitement” regarding returning to production for the new season, Annabel Jones, and Louise Sutton. Joining the team to serve as co-executive producer is Mark Kinsella. Looking ahead to the new season, series creator Brooker recently teased that Black Mirror will return “just in time for reality to catch up with it,” and we can’t wait for the result.
Black Mirror is streaming now on Netflix.
