Warner Bros had a wildly successful year in 2025, but the studio is having a rough go at things in 2025 with a few recent box office bombs. Warner Bros was the studio behind James Gunn’s second DCU movie, Supergirl, which flew into theaters earlier in the summer. Carrying a $170 million budget, Supergirl grossed only $120 million at the global box office, and it’s estimated that it lost the studio upwards of $100 million. What makes this even worse is that it won’t finish the year as Warner Bros most devastating loss. That title belongs to Digger, the new blockbuster film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárrittu and starring Tom Cruise. It’s estimated that the Digger budget ballooned to around $180 million during production, and the film opened with only $20 million during its first weekend in theaters.
While Warner Bros has had to absorb a few box office bombs this year, it’s not the only time the studio has been under the microscope. It was reported last year that Warner Bros was going up for sale, and while it was once thought that Netflix would be the leading bidder for the studio, this all turned upside down when Paramount offered a whopping $110 billion to acquire the property. After months of jumping through legal hoops, the Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros officially went final this morning, and the new shared company, Skydance, will begin trading today on the New York Stock Exchange. It’s officially the end of an era for Warner Bros, which has been operating as a studio independent of other studios for well over 100 years now.
What Does This Mean For Warner Bros Going Forward?
Now that Paramount has acquired Warner Bros, it means that Paramount will have final say over all of Warner Bros decisions regarding movies and HBO shows. Warner Bros had become widely known as one of the most storied studios in Hollywood history with over 100 years worth of great movies and shows, but now all decisions will have to go through Paramount as well, a company that has a much more checkered history of success with movies and TV. The leading force behind this merger has been David Zaslav, who came in and took over Warner Bros as CEO in 2022 and is expected to receive a hefty sum for his part in the merger.
