One of the greatest appeals of the sci-fi genre lies in its ability to showcase a dystopian reality that we are yet to experience in the real world. The universe being an uncharted and strange place with danger beyond reckoning is one of the main themes that sets apart science fiction franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars. In the modern age of streaming, one streaming service has dedicated itself to delivering prestige sci-fi television and that platform is Apple TV. With shows like its hit dystopian sci-fi series, Silo, the streaming service is light years ahead of its competitors where sci-fi is concerned. However, the most complex sci-fi series out there does not call Apple TV home.
As far as mind-bending storytelling goes, Netflix‘s 3 Body Problem is far ahead of the competition. Upon its release in 2024, the series very quickly dominated the platform’s charts for several weeks as it consistently challenged the perspective of what was potentially possible with the universe all around us. After a surprising delay, Netflix announced that the acclaimed series would return for two more seasons as it looks to wrap up its complex story. Netflix‘s 3 Body Problem is an adaptation of Cixin Liu‘s acclaimed novel trilogy Remembrance of Earth’s Past. The novel series is one of China’s most acclaimed works of science fiction, with The Three-Body Problem being the first book in a trilogy. However, it is not the only adaptation based on Cixin‘s work coming in the near future.
At the opening ceremony of Busan International Film Festival, Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, who is serving as the festival’s president, offered up some details of his upcoming adaptation of the sci-fi epic. Per Deadline, Zhang explained that, despite news regarding the adaptation being scarce since it was first announced at the Shanghai film festival in 2024, things are moving ahead smoothly. Yimou, one of China’s most prominent film directors over the last few years, directed the 2016 action fantasy The Great Wall, which starred Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal. On stage at Busan Cinema Center, Yimou had this to say about his upcoming adaptation:
“The Three-Body Problem is a great work of science fiction, but it’s hard to photograph, so we spent several years polishing the script. In this era of AI, with its democratization of images, audience expectation is extremely high so we hope to live up their expectations and make a good movie.”
