‘Stargate’: Prime Video’s Series Officially Revived by ‘WandaVision’ Creator!!

Chevrons are locked! Amazon is reviving its long-dormant Stargate franchise once more, after a cancelled attempt earlier this year. This time, they’re bringing in a big-name creator who’s had big success with science fiction and fantasy.

Stargate began in 1994, with a movie from the minds of blockbuster dream team Ronald Emmerich and Dean Devlin. It centered around the alien device of the title, which was found buried in the Egyptian desert decades earlier. In the 1990s, it was finally activated, creating a portal from Earth to a distant planet where powerful aliens masquerade as gods. A military team led by Colonel Jack O’Neill (Kurt Russell) and Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) defeated the malevolent aliens and freed their human slaves. The movie was a modest hit, and spun off a popular TV series, Stargate SG-1, with Richard Dean Anderson as O’Neill and Michael Shanks as Jackson. That show ran for 10 seasons and 214 episodes, and spun off a number of satellites, including Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. The series has largely remained in stasis since Universe was cancelled in 2011, but retains a devoted fanbase.

Now, Variety reports that a new Stargate series is in the works, with Jac Schaeffer in command. Schaeffer broke out with WandaVision, Disney+‘s inaugural MCU series that became a critical and ratings smash in 2021. The series put Marvel stalwarts the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and the Vision (Paul Bettany) through a bizarre sitcom-themed mystery. She followed that up with the spin-off series Agatha All Along, which centered around wicked witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), who was the surprise villain of WandaVision. A third part of the trilogy of series, VisionQuest, is set to premiere next week; Schaeffer executive produces that series, but handed showrunning duties over to Terry Matalas. She recently signed an overall deal with Prime Video; the Stargate series will be the first project under that deal.

What Happened to the Last ‘Stargate’ Series in Development at Prime Video?

Last year, Prime Video announced with much fanfare that Martin Gero, a veteran of the previous Stargate TV series, was working on a new revival of the series. This project was said to involve a parallel universe, and would be in conversation with the longstanding Stargate continuity. However, it was cancelled earlier this year, as it was reportedly too focused on the show’s existing fanbase. A subsequent social media pressure campaign has dogged Prime Video ever since, as the sizable Stargate fan contingent has expressed their ire over the decision.
