Synopsis – When police make a terrifying discovery at a local farmhouse, the eccentric purveyor of the freak show sees an opportunity that will lead her troupe either to their salvation or ruin.
Episode – S04E01 “Monsters Among Us”
My Take – Freak Show is the fourth
& probably the last season of American Horror Story & in keeping with the show’s tradition, the opening credit sequence is an essential mixture of horrow & one of the most terrifying sequences filled with horror references. Now before I talk more about the premiere, let me warn you, their are potential spoilers ahead!
American Horror Story: Coven was frankly one of the worst series I had ever seen!! It started with great potential & got lost into its various sub plot & ending in the most tackiest way possible. A lot is expected from Freak Show. Going into the first episode, Monsters Among Us, American Horror Story series originals Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters are back as members of a traveling circus oddities show. Frances Conroy and Denis O’Hare, also from Season 1, return for the fourth season. Series regulars from season three Coven, but relatively new stars to the FX series, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett also join as “freaks” in the circus in Freak Show. They even let anxious viewers know who the masked murderous figure would be in the season : A freaking murderous clown with the worst smile ever!! (One of my biggest nightmares).
The serial killer aspect of Freak Show and highlighted in Monsters Among Us is the most compelling feature of the episode by the halfway point and grounds the episode. Pilot episodes always suffer slightly as they scramble to introduce any and all important characters, and Freak Show has an excessive amount. Though all actors involved are exceedingly superior in their craft especially Evan Peters, who seems so comfortable in his role, I think he is ready enough to carry his own series soon! But it is Jessica Lange whose has a weird unexplained accent & seems to be carrying her Coven role forward. Freak Show has started off well & promises to be a fun show for their weird, bizarre & exceptionally different characters. I especially think Sarah Paulson’s portrayal of conjoined twins Bette and Dot Tattler will be the stand-out performance thanks to their polarizing personalities & eagerly awaiting the arrival of Michael Chiklis (I am a fan!). Overall, the premiere has started on a path which seems elegant, beautifully structured, and frequently astonishing. Also it was insane, obviously. And brilliant. And sad. But mostly insane!!
