Hercules (2014) Review!!

hercules-movie-2014-wallpaper-533a3a0403653Synopsis – Having endured his legendary twelve labors, Hercules, the Greek demigod, has his life as a sword-for-hire tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter seek his aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord.

My Take – I believe Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock is probably the only wrestler who can actually act! & provided as charming as he is, donning the role of a Greek legend himself seemed like a dream itself. Plus this 2014 version of the Greek demi god is based on one of my favorite comic book issues from Radical named Thracian Wars. All seemed good until the 1st trailer came out.

Hercules-2014-1The trailer teases this movie as being a myths and monsters movie: it isn’t. Instead its a fairly routine swords and sandals actioner, and the mythical creatures teased in the trailer all come before the opening title, and are either tall tales depicted, or things seen unclear from a distance. What is left is a rather dark film with a lot of familiar battle action, pitched uneasily at a level which is too graphic for family viewing and not graphic enough for those who like blood and dismemberment. I know not much can be expected from a Brett Ratner film, but I expected more from this. Right from the start of the film we are immersed into a world without character development and rushed story telling. Brett Ratner’s feeble direction in this crap-fest succeeded tremendously in ruining everyone’s career involved in it. Zach Synder (300) did a better job in converting a comic book to a live action with a smaller budget. If you can ignore all the plot holes you are still left with a movie without much character development or narrative at all.

hercules-movie-2014-dwayne-johnsonDwayne Johnson does this stuff well; he looks good, has great physical presence and, even when the part is somewhat darker than usual, he remains very likable. The supporting cast are alright except Ian McShane, with all the best moments of humor while Joseph Fienes is wasted, and John Hurt gets to play both ends of the boring & annoying! Even though the whole film is miles better than the Kellan Lutz starred Legend of Hercules (Read my review here), but in case your a fan of the mythical version of our titular character, or even Dwayne Johnson or even sandal/swords flicks, watching Hercules seems like a bad idea!
