Filmmaker Drake Doremus is sticking with the sci-fi genre for his next film. The director behind Like Crazy most recently helmed the gorgeous, emotionally affecting sci-fi love story Equals, starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult, and he’s now putting together his next project: another sci-fi love story. Per THR, Charlie Hunnam and Lea Seydoux are set to lead the cast of the untitled picture, for which story details are being kept under wraps.
Doremus is known for shooting highly improvised films on which the actors concoct much of the dialogue themselves, but Equals was more script driven than anything he’d done before, working from a screenplay by Nathan Parker. For this next project, Doremus is teaming up with playwright Rich Greenburg, who’s handling script duties. Ridley Scott’s production company Scott Free is once again producing after backing Equals.
As a big fan of Doremus’ work—his alluring Like Crazy follow-up Breathe In was criminally under seen—I’m all in for this next project, and I’ll be curious to see how this sci-fi love story stands apart from Equals, which took place in a future where humans were medically drained of emotion.
Hunnam most recently worked with Guillermo del Toro on back-to-back projects Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak, and he’ll be seen next year on the big screen leading Guy Ritchie’s fantasy retelling King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, which could be a potential franchise play. Hunnam also stars in James Gray’s highly anticipated follow-up to his acclaimed drama The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z, which also stars Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland and debuts at this year’s New York Film Festival.
French actress Seydoux, meanwhile, took on the “Bond Girl” moniker opposite Daniel Craig in last year’s Spectre and earlier this year starred in Yorgos Lanthimos’ critically acclaimed film The Lobster. She appears in the next film from Xavier Dolan, It’s Only the End of the World, and flirted with the prospect of starring in the X-Men spinoff Gambit opposite Channing Tatum that was supposed to start filming last fall, but it’s unclear if she’s still attached to that project given its significant delays.
What is clear, however, is that these two performers are keen on working with highly talented filmmakers, and they’ll continue that streak with Doremus.
