With Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake hours away from dropping and a new film reboot in the works, 2019 was already shaping up to be a pretty good year for fans of the franchise, and now, Resident Evil might be heading to Netflix. Deadline reports that a scripted Resident Evil series is in early development at the streaming network, who would team with Constantin films on the project.

While there’s no official comment from Netflix, the report says “the drama series will explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus. While the project is in early stages, the series is expected to incorporate all of Resident Evil’s signature elements, including action sequences and ‘easter eggs.’”

The original Resident Evil game hit consoles in 1996 and had time to grow into a full-blown sensation by the time the first film adaptation hit theaters in 2002. Paul W.S. Anderson directed all six films in that franchise, which ran through 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. While those started with one foot firmly planted in zombie horror, it eventually evolved into a non-stop, mutant-blasting action franchise, so it will be interesting to see what angle a series would take to the material.
