Season 3 of Welcome to Wrexham, the acclaimed series about one of the most dramatic underdog stories in British sport, is about to hit our screens and the trailer for the new season has just dropped. As you may be aware, Rob McElhenney (aka Mac from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Ryan Reynolds (the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool himself) decided a while back that running a historic football club in Wales is their next logical career move.
Enter Welcome to Wrexham, a docuseries that’s less about goals and more about dreams in the hard-knock town of Wrexham, North Wales, as two preening actors who know absolutely nothing about the sport plays take the helm of the world’s third-oldest professional football club. Back in 2020, Rob and Ryan hatched a plot to buy the 5th-tier Red Dragons, banking on transforming the underdog team into a Cinderella story for the ages. The world perked up its ears, and lo and behold, change kicked off. After slogging through 15 brutal seasons in the National League, the team punched its ticket back to the English Football League. It was a big step up from the National League. Although the quality isn’t too different, League Two’s intensity is not for the faint-hearted, and between the injuries and hiccups, the drama off the pitch might just rival the drama on it.
As the town revels in its gritty return to form, there’s a palpable buzz about what’s next. Can Wrexham AFC take this challenge head-on and soar again? Meanwhile, over in the women’s camp, Wrexham AFC’s Women’s Team is schooling everyone on the pitch, riding high off an undefeated season and a promotion to the Welsh Adran Premier League. With fresh faces, a fresh pitch, and fresh competition, will they keep their edge and stake their claim as top dogs?
When Does ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Air?
Season three of Welcome to Wrexham promises even more thrills as the series gains exclusive access to the team in the EFL, sneaking us into the locker room and right into the thick of the biggest matches Wrexham AFC has faced. Some of you may already know how this historic season ends for the Red Dragons, but for those who don’t — strap yourselves in, you won’t see this ending coming.
Season 3 Premieres May 2 at 10 PM ET/PT on FX, and will stream the next day on Hulu. Check out the trailer for the season above.
