‘The Mummy’: May Calamawy Joins Lee Cronin’s Blumhouse Remake!!

Moon Knight breakout star May Calamawy is set to be a part of Lee Cronin’s upcoming reboot of The Mummy. Calamawy is the latest addition to the film’s cast alongside Veronica Falcón (Queen of the South) and May Elghety (Grand Hotel). While the plot details for The Mummy are currently under wraps, the Atomic Monster and Blumhouse co-production has locked in Jack Reynor (Midsommar) as the lead, while Laia Costa (The Wheel of Time) plays the role of his wife.

Production for The Mummy is currently underway in Ireland with James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville as producers. Cronin is writing and directing the project, which is slated for release on April 17, 2026. In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, Cronin expressed that the reboot will be “unlike any Mummy movie” the audience has ever seen. The director revealed that he aims to create something “very ancient and very frightening.”

The Mummy marks Cronin’s second collaboration with New Line Cinema after the 2023 horror fantasy, Evil Dead Rise, which collected over $147 million worldwide. Starring Alyssa Sutherland and Morgan Davies as estranged sisters Ellie and Beth, Evil Dead Rise tells the story of a demonic presence that is unleashed after the two find a mysterious book in Ellie’s apartment building. A spinoff of the film titled Evil Dead Burn, directed by Sébastien Vaniček, is slated for a 2026 release.

Lee Cronin’s ‘The Mummy’ Serves As the Horror Franchise’s Third Reboot

Universal Pictures’ original The Mummy was released in 1932 and starred Boris Karloff as Imhotep, an ancient mummy who was killed for attempting to bring his dead lover back to life. The franchise saw its first reboot in 1999 with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the lead. Fraser went on to star in two sequels titled The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). However, the franchise was rebooted once again in 2017 with Tom Cruise as the lead. The Cruise-led reboot’s first installment, however, failed to make a profit at the box office, which led to all further sequels being scrapped.

The Mummy will release in theaters worldwide on April 17, 2026.
