Adapting manga and anime series into live-action is always tricky, but it can immensely pay off if fans warm up to it. Today, Netflix is rolling out the first trailer for Bet, a new series that brings another manga story to life. The story centers around a girl named Yumeko (Miku Martineau) who enters the gambling underworld of a boarding school for elite students while forwarding a secret revenge plan. The series premieres on May 15.
The trailer for Bet makes it clear that Netflix is keeping the manga energy up and betting on over-the-top visual elements that worked so well with One Piece. We will see eye patches, masks and a protagonist who uses a distinct behavior during gambling sessions in order for people not to suspect she has a plan in motion. However, her talent in games shakes up the entire school’s hierarchy, which makes her a target of those who want to keep the status quo as it is.
The cast of Bet also features Ayo Solanke (Clown in a Cornfield), Eve Edwards (The Good Doctor), Clara Alexandrova (Alert: Missing Persons Unit), Hunter Cardinal (Scout), Anwen O’Driscoll (You Can Live Forever), Aviva Mongillo (Workin’ Moms), Ryan Sutherland (Nick Shorts). The first season of the series will be spread across 10 episodes.
What Manga Is Netflix’s ‘Bet’ Based On?
Bet is based on Kakegurui — Compulsive Gambler, a manga series created by Homura Kawamoto that was first released in 2014. Shortly after, the story was adapted into anime format by MAPPA, the same animation studio behind standout titles like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man and the final season of Attack on Titan. This isn’t the first time that Kakegurui is adapted into live-action, though. A Japanese live-action starring Minami Hamabe (Godzilla: Minus One) debuted in 2018 and is also available to stream on Netflix.
Bet comes to Netflix at a time when the streamer seems to have a handle on anime live-action adaptations. Aside from One Piece, the streamer has also managed to successfully adapt titles like Alice In Borderland (which is gearing up for its third season), Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin and even Zoom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. With the adaptations significantly improving in quality, Netflix will even try a do-over with Death Note — a new live-action series is in the works with the Stranger Things showrunners at the helm.
Netflix debuts all episodes of Bet on May 15. You can check out the trailer below:
