‘Crystal Lake’: Long-Delayed ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Series Finally Begins Production!!

Grab your bags and make sure you grab something strong enough to hold off a machete — Crystal Lake has finally begun production. That’s right, the very first series spin-off of the Friday the 13th franchise has cameras picked up and ready to roll, with series showrunner, Brad Caleb Kane, taking to his social media to share the wonderful yet horrific news.

In an Instagram post captioned “Crystal Lake Production offices are live. It’s all happening. MACHETES FOR EVERYONE!Kane shared an image of a desk filled with Friday the 13th-themed material. On the right is a folder that features a sticker of the iconic killer, Jason Vorhees’, while next to it sits a script for presumably the pilot. Written on the script, we can see the production company, A24, scrawled across in large letters, while Kane’s name is listed as the scribe. The script also gives credit to Victor Miller, who penned the original movie that started the franchise all the way back in 1980. It’s certainly an exciting moment for a series that has faced multiple setbacks but is finally on track to give audiences quite the fright when it eventually slashes onto Peacock.

The last major update for the highly-anticipated series came almost one month ago when it was revealed that Freaks and Geeks and Dead to Me alum, Linda Cardellini, would be leading the cast as Mrs. Voorhees. The project is slated to be a prequel to the original film and promises to give plenty of background to the relationship between Mrs. Vorhees and her son and eventual killer, Jason. What we know so far is that viewers will meet Mrs. Vorhees at a crossroads in her life, when she decides that she’ll need to give up her dreams of becoming a professional singer to take care of her special needs child, Jason. But, when Jason dies at summer camp, Mrs. Vorhees becomes bent on payback. Right now, no casting details surrounding the masked maniac in the making — Jason — have been revealed.

‘Crystal Lake’s Bumpy Road To Existence

In total, the Friday the 13th franchise contains a whopping 12 feature-length films, with Crystal Lake serving as the first time the story has crossed over into episodic territory. The last film in the lineup, Friday the 13th, which was a reboot of the original, came out back in 2009, meaning Crystal Lake is a sight for sore eyes. The prequel has officially been in the works since 2022 and even had a release window set before the sharp end of the machete dulled. After Bryan Fuller stepped away from the production, it seemed like all hope was lost, but now things are finally back on track.

Check out Kane’s celebratory post above.
