Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is going to last a while. Paramount Pictures‘ Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, set to be the culmination of Tom Cruise‘s Mission: Impossible franchise, has a runtime of two hours and 49 minutes, according to ComicBook.com, making it the longest film in the Mission: Impossible series. The nearly three-hour runtime means audiences can expect some more heart-pounding action from Cruise‘s Ethan Hunt.
The 2:49 runtime, which ComicBook reported was confirmed by the studio directly, makes the film six minutes longer than the franchise’s prior record holder: Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, with the 2023 film coming in at two hours and 43 minutes. While a six minute difference may not seem like that much, it is a significant amount when it comes to action films. However, it is still not the longest movie of Cruise‘s career; that record goes to Magnolia, the 1999 Paul Thomas Anderson film, which has a runtime of 3:08.
Specific plot lines about The Final Reckoning remain hidden in a spy briefcase. However, it is known that the film will follow IMF Agent Hunt as he works to stop a global catastrophe. The film is a direct sequel to Dead Reckoning, and will see Hunt and his team try to stop his longtime adversary Gabriel (Esai Morales), who is working as a implement an AI system called the Entity that can potentially destroy the world. That film left off with Ethan and the rest of the IMF group planning to infiltrate a sunken submarine that holds the secret to the Entity.
‘The Final Reckoning’ Will Feature Massive Action Sequences
Cruise is known for his action and stunt work, and from the behind-the-scenes footage and trailers that have been released, it’s clear that The Final Reckoning will have both. While Cruise is no stranger to death-defiance, one recently released feature shows him hanging off the wings of a plane. The movie star appears to be dangling thousands of feet in the air, and is strapped in with only a single safety cable. So clearly, The Final Reckoning will be ratcheting up the stunts for Cruise, who has already been seen in prior Mission: Impossible films jumping a motorcycle off a cliff and free-climbing the world’s tallest building.
The Final Reckoning will feature some of the classic cast from the prior films, including Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Haley Atwell, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff, Vanessa Kirby, Angela Basset, and more. The film was directed once again by Christopher McQuarrie, who also penned the script alongside Erik Jendresen. The Paramount and Skydance film is produced by McQuarrie and Cruise for his TC Productions banner.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning hits theaters on May 23, 2025. Prior Mission: Impossible films are streaming on Paramount+.
